    Coupla questions.

    a) does anyone know if the standard 105KPH speed alert can be easily adjusted to trigger at say 72KPH or is it an internal ECU function? I know most people disconnect theirs but in our case we do heaps of suburban travel often thru many radar traps...[IMG] = [IMG]

ifnot, I'm thinking about modifying an additional two K-Zed TWD's into speed alert sensors for both my zed and wifey's Skyline.

    b) Does anyone know in the zed if the signal from the speed sensor to speedometer and ECU (pin 53) is a standard variable voltage range or a 'pulsing' range (if that makes sense?) ?

I've determined that the speed sensor on the skyline works on a voltage range of between 0.5 to 5v depending on KPH, does anyone know if this is same for zed as the FSM does not quote a range.

FYI: The TWD can be set to trigger at a preset voltage (in the original design this is via the coolant temp sensor voltage to ECU) so to use it for a speed sensor it apparently needs to work within a standard non pulsing voltage range)

Instead of an LED, a sound would be better for this setup so I'm going to repurpose an existing buzzer (the annoying reversing one ;)) in both cars triggered by a relay.

why not buy a road angel i think they are called >

we are selling them at work and they warn you whenever you are approching fixed speed cameras red light cameras and a few others things sorry cant remember the price of them thou.

    This is a good question

I don't want to disable my 105 speed alert, I want to make it trigger at a higher speed. Say 130klm/hr.

The tech artical doesnt tell you how to mod for that.

I have something you might like...

I purchased a Jaycar kit that displays the actual speed on a digital screen and can also be set to trigger a warning beep when exceeding a user-defined speed. My Apexi RSM does all this so I don't have a need for it anymore.

Send me an e-mail if you're interested.

From memory, the speed alert is triggered by a controller behind the drivers kick-panel. I think it's a simple comparitor that triggers the timing controller to generate the beeps. You'd need the circuit for the comparitorto work out if it can be adjustable.

The signal from the speed sender is (sort of) square wave, 0 - 12 V (I think). The cluster cleans it up to real squarte wave before passing it to the ECU etc. It also converts it to analogue for the speedo.

Speed alert using VR2 settting on the speedo..>>

On the speedometer there are two small blue variable resistors. VR1 is used to calibrate the speed and VR2 is used to calibrate for the speed warning chime.

VR2 is a 2k ohm linear device. The formula used to calibrate the chime is as follows:

    VR2(ohms) = 16xkph-750

Thus, for 0 resistance the lowest setting is 47 kph and at maximum 2k ohm the setting is 171 kph. It is a simple matter to remove VR2 and replace it with an external 2k linear potentiometer graduated with speed markings at say 50, 80, 100 and 110 kph. Of course you will need to reconnect the green/yellow wire for the chime.

    Cheers

This is my posting for December. Once per month is enough

Oops, I forgot to mention this formula is for a stock speedo (0 to 180 kph).

    Wow, thanks all !!

Zcar91, so to get the chime to trigger at say 72kays, does this potentiometer just solder into the circuit? BTW , I have a 300kph speedo, does this change anything?... :D

    Potentiometer..>>

A linear 2k ohm potentiometer can be purchased from Dick Smith (item R6917 $7.87). Simply, remove the PCB mounted VR2 from the speedo circuit board and solder two wires to connect to this externally mounted potentiometer. Then, reconnect the chime wiring and go for a drive. When at 100kph adjust the potentiometer until the chime is heard and then stop the vehicle and mark the position of the potentiometer. Repeat this procedure for other speeds (for 60 and 80 kph).

    Bingo - cheap speed reminder!!!

    Cheers

Fantastic zcar91... How to identify VR2?

    Adjustable speed warning

You know I'm going to say it, G P S

My GPS Sat navigation gives me a voice instruction "you are over the speed limit". Come to think of it, I hear it quite a lot. :):zlove:

Are you sure it's the GPS...

    and not the PSA??

I often ask for "permission" before my foot starts to get heavy. Mind you if I hear what starts to sound like "No" I can easily drown it out with the exhaust drone

Re: Are you sure it's the GPS...

    Too tru.

I heard some little voice over the UHF say "Wanna play PEX?"

After that I couldn't hear the PSA or the GPS.

Is this effected by a 320klmh speedo

There was never an answer to the above question as a few of us here wanted to know

Just wondering if anyone can answer the 320klmh speedo question as well
=- will it change the effect or the size of the resistance etc??

    Thanks Zcar91

Great information. I will put this on my "to do" list.
