I arrived in Melbourne last Friday night after a huge drive and the day after I've started up the car and there is a noise not sure how to describe it, between grinding and whining maybe when I push on the clutch pedal. I checked the fluid and its been over filled a lot it seems (just got it back from the shop before I left and didn't even check this) as it was never this full when I did it, always just under the full line.

Any suggestions on what it is and things to check?

Also it goes away once its warmed up for some reason after some drive, only happens in 1st and reverse as far as I've noticed and also neutral actually, just pressing in the clutch, once it its out its fine so 100% not the gear box again... only happens when its cold and only just started couple of days ago, could have been Sunday not Sat.

Could that have been caused by overfilling the fluid as much as the guy did?

I wouldn't think so. Mine makes a variety of noises lol. Wearable parts wear ;)

Ah ok was just making sure, if it was then would send him the bill lol, next step then, how to fix it? Or will it do any damage short term not fixing it? Cause I'm guessing long term it will....

If the noise is grinding when you touch the clutch pedal it sounds like the clutch release bearing is starting to fail , that's just from my interpretation of the noise , zeds and hundreds of little noises are common

Almost certain it will be the thrust bearing given it makes a noise when you push in the clutch.

Its not an unusual for a thrust bearing to go even if it was replaced when the clutch was installed

If it is the thrust bearing, it is common for them to make more and more noise as you go
particularly if it has a grinding/ rattling noise more so than a sqeaking noise as once the bearings are ratshit they go downhill quick, whereas if the bearings are fine and its just noisy they can take a while to get worse.

Playing with the clutch by pushing it in and out (and riding it) will tell you if its the thrust bearing as the noise will reflect when its pushed in.

    Goodluck

If its sat for a bit the grease might have either escaped the thrust bearing, or its sitting on the bottom of the bearing, only getting thrown around when driven (warmed)...

Im banking on a failing bearing... I have one from a brand new clutch kit thats done maybe 2000km. Pretty poor considering the cost. But too much of a pita job to warrant doing it now. When it gets really noisy i might look at it again. haha.

Hopefully its not a gearbox bearing though... 1st/rev shaft....

Sounds exactly like what my car did :D Was diagnosed as the thrust bearing, but then it stopped doing it. Bit scared it'll do it next time I start the car, we'll see.

Mine was also after a full day of driving, I wonder if there's a correlation.

I think to correlation is the cheap thrust bearings that are finding their way into peoples clutch kits.

The thrust bearing I bought to do Scotts car was $52 for a jap made one.

If you buy a F1 ebay kit, do you reckon it has a cut price thrust bearing?

    You bet..........

Who makes koyo bearings? That's the one i got with the hd clutch kit from asc. I've used koyo wheel bearings in the suby and seem good... F1 kits might be a differing bunch though.

I put my F1 kit in 07, still going strong, no noise from the thrust bearing.
