Can I shorten my auto gear ratios for faster accleration? if so how?:):)

  1. Hey everyeone,
I just wanted to know if anyone has tried messing aound with the Z32 auto gear box(not sure its actual model name) To shorten the gears for faster accleration. As I rarely go over 60 and only do city cruising I think it would be very helpfull way to increase low end power without much modding or is it a lot harder then i think?
Any help is appreciated you guys in this forum are awesome what a great community, If the rest of the world were so helpfull maybe it would be a better place. There we go all the worlds problems would be solved if it only contaioned Z:zlove: owners lol. The only wars would be on the sreets lol

Anyway cheers for any help given.
    Lucas

    manual conversion :)

  3. would that be easier then shortening as the only reason i suggested that instead is as I though it would be easier then a swap or is it? Dont get me wrong I love manuals and would rather have one but what trouble and money is a conversion worth?
    Cheers mate

This question confuses me... Put it in power mode or put your foot to the floor fast so the gearbox kicks down you'll see the power light on your dash light up and you'll take off much faster. Yours is NA? they still have the kick down and to 60? there's hardly anything out there that can pass me from the lights if I try... lack of turbos may be the real problem. 2nd gear will take you to 60.

  5. yes i am quite aware tt's are a lot faster and comparing your tt to my na is not really a fair comparison, I had a look at your car (VERY NICE) but of course it would destroy most of the lights with all those mods. Kick down yes it kicks into first if that is what you mean? and what do you mean by power mode?(there is a power mode how do i get into such a mode?). Also what is confusing you about my question when you shorten gears it equals faster acceleration I just wanted to know if it can be done.

I didn't mean to compare, I just remembered aus specs don't have the power mode switch.. but they can still do it, if you put your foot to the floor fast and hard a light on the dash with "Power" on it comes on and your shift maps change to give you much faster take off. Other than that you could look at shift kits for the auto. :)

Wouldn't increasing the line pressure give the desired result?

  8. power mode hey I going to go try that now and I will come back and post results in 10, wish me luck:)

  9. No power mode, Either the light/bulb on my dash is gone for the power mode disply on the dash or it is not there. When i start the car to check all globes I cant see any power on there so not sure. Are yo certain it has it? being a 95 aus spec auto?

Yea my old 1992 aus spec had it. Should be on the right side of the wheel next to the overdrive light. Time to check the throttle position sensor maybe.

  11. no overdrive light either:(

I have swapped my NA auto control unit to a TT auto control unit.

The gear changes are much more faster. Cheap little upgrade..

My auspec also doesn't have a power light :( i even took out the cluster and tried sourcing it - over drive and blank yellow are all there though but nooone light up when i flat foot. I know there is a power mode - my Z seems to get stuck in this mode after using cruise control.

But I would highly advise the OP to try a Twin Turbo auto control unit. You just need to open up the wooden pannel in the passenger foot area to swap out.

No, this would just make for firmer shifting. Swapping out gear ratios in any transmission is an expensive undertaking. You'll have to get custom ratio's made up, there won't be any to fit the box in a swap in swap out way. And to change gear ratio's, you need to strip down the box anyway, so in that way, it's harder than a conversion.

Swapping the diff over is about as easy as it's going to get, but it won't be a great deal of difference.

isnt the z32 auto also shared sith the r33gtst and a nissan patrol? maybe check out if they have the same rations in those variations...........

There are some minor variations in RE4R01A auto's but nothing as substantial as a diff.

There are R200 diff ratios that offer more than the above approx 10% benefit, but I am not sure if they will fit in the Z32 housing.

I do not think you will gain that much but changing a diff but higher fuel at high way speeds, possible to the point of being outside closed loop and that would hurt.

I know you said you only go 60 km/h but to get significant benefit in that range you will need to create significant deficiencies in the other end of the speedo. It is just how it is.

Just hold the auto shift back in first, 7000 RPM redline is 75 km/h in first gear in a NA auto. It will be about as pokey as it is going to get from 40-60.

I'd bet your car probably isn't running right. Get the engine and gearbox checked out completely before trying to mod it to make it go faster.

Also, you will have to change the gearing on your speedo sender if you change the diff, otherwise your speedo won't read accurately.

Hey in relations to the power button y'all don't just mean the o/d button? What's this power button us aus specs are missing?

Shortening gear ratios is not like in your racing games lmao! Missive job!!! Probs would need 10k lol for city driving you are better off with what you have right now instead of a manual. I would suggest looking into a SAW kit :p
