Hopefully someone can give me a bit of a list with steps with products required as to how I should go about repairing the paint on the rear quarter pannels.

For the past 3 years since Z ownership this ugly rear quarter pannel has looked at me, its time to fix it!

As you can see, the paint has cracked and is exposing bare metal, the area covers about 10cm across, so im thinking i need to sand away at least another 10cm into the nearby paintwork.

Im looking for directions on how to at least get this area back into primer, from there I know the metal is protected.

There's bog and rust in that pic ...sadly you'll need to strip the whole panel down to get a real idea of what's going on behind the paint. Then again if you just want a bodge job then a quick wet and dry sand and a quick spray with filling primer will make it look like it's been repaired properly :(

the above comments are correct its hard to tell how much bog is in there, looking at what you have chipped away I would imagine that the bog goes at least that far either side of what you can see but that is just a random guess assuming the original repair is being feathered out from the exposed edges to bare metal, as stated I would be inclined to strip back as much as can be if you were about to start the repair, however if you are just trying to seal it for the short term rub back to a point where the bog is not lifting clean and treat rust, fill with bog if wanted, then prime and put some actual paint over to seal it, remember Primer is not a sealer its job is to promote the adhesion of paint to metal

Looks like rust has created a buble and then water has slowely gotten underneath the filler and paint work .

Like mentioned above , take the loose filler and paint back to where it sticks to the panel . Investigate where the rust is coming from . Was it a ding from the outside ? or is it more sinister and coming from behind ?

Sand or if need be use a grinder and take away almost all the rust . If you still have panel left then treat with rust converter inside and out and fill area to get contour of panel back . If its too bad and you create a hole then you need to weld a plate in by cutting slightly larger than the rust hole you have created . I usually cut a neat square peice out and replace with another then mig weld in and grind flush . Sand , fill , sand then filler primer , sand again with finer paper like 600 and work your way to 1200 for the rest of the quarter before paint .

If you dont fix the rust and work out where its coming from it will only come back .

    Good luck

    Cheers
