Car refuses to start ..

The other week my Z stalled while idling at an intersection, so I restarted it, stayed on for a few seconds more only to stall again & not restart this time. That day there was an abnormally loud ticking while the engine was running.

So now the car cranks over but not start.

To cut the story short, I've checked fuel (all good), air & spark only to find 0 spark. For piece of mind I've replaced the fuel pump, filter, battery, CAS & a brand new S2 PTU (parts I was going to replace anyway).

And still receiving error code 11 (CAS) even after fitting a known working CAS, wiring all looks good as well as the plug / connectors.

What else can be done ??

    Mitch Has one gear: GO

Check for continuity between the ECU harness and the PTU. See service manual for the specifics (EF EC Chapter)
Also check, double check and triple check that the PTU connector has seated correctly. I had similar issues when the earth pin pushed out and it got no spark at all... Just a thought.

Check that the timing belt is o.k and the crank pulley key hasn't sheared as well that timing belt tensioner and pulleys. I wouldn't be cranking the motor over until yoiu know this area is o.k or you could do major damage. Best way would be to turn over with socket on crank bolt to get cam pulleys lined up then count belt teeth as per manual if it isn't an obvious problem. i'm wondering if a timing belt area problem is causing the c.a.s not to spin thus no spark. Just an idea.

I had something similar, is your ECU socketed?

Cheers Mitch, I'll give that a go.

Thankfully that area is all good, when removing the previous CAS we had a proper look & everything was in good shape. I did initially have this thought as well & glad this wasn't the case.

After refreshing my memory & going over Ross's (previous owner) build thread, it is socketed.
What was your problem & solution ?

Try a standard ECU, may or may not be the problem. But when mine was conking out it stalled at an intersection and refused to start for quite a while.

Haven't gotten any further as of late, latest was trying another ECU w/ no luck & still reading the CAS error code. Also went through this 'How-To' (http://www.300zxclub.com/showthread.php?t=169134) w/ everything showing no problems ..

I am still going to replace the CAS w/ a 2nd known working unit in the next 2 days in case the last was faulty.

    Driving me ****ing insane.

Are you saying you were able to inspect the entire timing belt by removing the CAS?
I"d be getting those belt covers off for a good look.

    Adz_79 I do it in a Zed

Sounds like a similar situation with Benny. Take out the cas and crank engine while checking the cam gear is actually rotating. Benny's crank was rotating, no start and Code 11. Tried multiple cas, no luck until we removed cas and checked to see if the cam gear was actually rotating on crank. Which it wasn't

Removed both covers when removing the CAS the first time around :)
