1989 2+2 TT auto .... STOCK as a rock (well except for rims;) )

Vibration is only felt in drive and is only there when the car has just commenced being driven, once its been driven for around 15mins the vibration totally dissappears.

If the car has been driven ealier in the day and is driven again after only a few hours of sitting the vibration returns just as if it were a first start of the day..... 15mins later and it dissappears again

Driving it hard or easy makes no differance to the length of the time this vibration lasts for.

The vibration can be felt from 40kph through to...... well fast !!! :D

The auto was replaced about a month ago but this has not changed any of the vibration effects .... was there before and is still there

Centre bearing has been inspected by a mechanic and has been said to be in good condition, I have also checked it for ANY movement and there is none at all.

All uni joints have also been checked in the same manor as the centre bearing and are also fully servicable.

    Ideas ????

Torque converter could be out of balance? I test drove a zed when I bought mine that only got a vibration at a certain rpm when in drive which he said he didnt know where it came from after having all the driveline checked out. Just a thought...

Maybe the driveshaft wasn't matchmarked to the diff when it was removed. Have a look in the service manual, shows where to check for runout.

Vibration issues with Zeds are a PITA!

My bet is the car has been sitting for a while and the centre bearing has sagged, after a short trip the radiant heat from the exhaust is enough to soften the rubber and allow the tailshaft to centralize on the centre bearing carrier.

Torque converter replaced when the auto was exchanged, a new one was fitted.

    interesting ..........

the car did sit for about 9months ( pregnant missus ;) ) although it did vibrate before the jiggity happened.... but much less and for a shorter period.

Might look at replacing the centre bearing

    Gearbox mounts sagged perhaps?
Easy to check, and was the cause of inconsistent vibrations in my Zed.

    That would be unlikely.

You sure it only happens in drive?

bit hard doing more than 40kph in reverse ......

    But....

yes it does it in all foward gears as it moves through the changes whilst in 'D'

yes I've tried only using 2nd gear with pwr/ecc switch in both positions.

Vibration there from around 40kph right through to MQ (Mighty Quick) and it always goes away after the 15min mark or there abouts.

I had this with a car I worked on a few years ago.

Rebuilt transmission/torque converter, and new one pce tail shaft. All mounts engine and tranny changed.

I ran the car on the hoist and could see the transmission waving back and forth when the wheels where turning. Like a tail

Turned out the input shaft in the tranny was bent slightly.and you could see the rear of the tranny waving in sympathy.

you should only do 1 thing at a time ,it will save you money in the long run,,mine had it when i bought it ,,it turned out to be the tailshft centre bearing,$70 on ebay, cheers

Agree with the Centre Bearing being the culprit.
The rubber cushion/ring and the bearing case hardens-up with age. When being driven, it softens due to heat(then sags slightly when parked/cold)causing a small mis-alignment.
A short stint of driving warms the rubber and the bearing re-aligns(exit vibration)only to re-appear the next time it cools down.
This has been documented numerous times on this forum during the past ten years.
Just replace the centre bearing as revhead advised.

It wasnt my car, was a customers car that was brought in to have the engine moiunts changed. He had already had heaps of work done elsewhere before I saw it.

almost cheap but the time the shaft is pulled apart,
plus their bout 4 odd kilo lighter

    Driveshaft is out of balance.....

    HELLO !!!!!!!!

The centre bearing will NOT cause vibration unless it is in the process of seizing

Vibration is created by the tailshaft being out of balance.

The bearing will always spin true no matter what position it is in after "sagging". The uni joints will take up any "misalignment" of the tailshaft, that is why they were invented.

The rubber "softening" scenario being espoused by various forum members probably holds some truth, BUT not in the cause of the vibration, rather in the transmission of the vibration.

When the rubber is cold and hard it readily transmits the vibration to the car body (via the mounts), when the rubber heats and softens... it begins to absorb the vibrations, creating the impression they have disappeared.
