Dear Z owners, I have designed and made a shifter worthy of the Z32's beautiful interior. This shifter is press fit over a tapered spindle that screws on to the Z32's gear stick (M10 x 1.25 thread on top), similar in concept to a morse taper mill bit holder or centre-drill on a lathe. This shifter will not come loose. In fact, becoming constantly enraged with my Momo coming loose in my hand is what prompted me to do this. Here it is It's CNC machined stainless steel and comes in two finishes; polished and black chrome. I like the black chrome and have it in my Z (my car in photos above), but both look equally classy in my opinion. Also, being solid steel, the shifter has a nice weight in the hand (approx 500g). It makes shifting through gears a tactile delight, and gives you a sense of richness and quality that is rare with products these days. I am currently gathering numbers for a limited production run, and it will be specifically for Z32's with threaded gear sticks (M10x1.25) which I think is most if not all of us. Price will be around $120 for polished stainless, $130 for black chrome. Pretty competitive I think for solid stainless steel. So PM me or email me at nhdesign@iinet.net.au if you'd like one or want to see more photos etc. If there's enough interest I'll get the ball rolling. Cheers Nick
hmmmmmmmmm. OT. looks good, but for much the same reason i havent gone an aftermarket gear shifter is the boot just sits there and looks crap.
Congrats Nick on making a fantastic looking quality product. I think the price is fair for what it is. Im happy to see more quality aussie made products rather than the cheap chinese shit made from melted down fridges and toasters. As for the stock shifter looking ugley, its true, this knob will look much better on a short shifter where it is chromed, or to chrome or paint the stock shifter
This is solid stainless 314 CNC machined/polished with a hard chrome plated surface. A Momo shifter will set you back $110 US not inc. postage, and it's cheap aluminium with, quite frankly, less than exquisite detailing. You're getting a bargain at this price.
Looks great but its going to be hot as FSCK in summer. I dont fancy having a nissan logo burned into my hand when trying to change gears, im not that hardcore
Agree 100% That thing is pretty flashy but is going to act as a giant "heatsink" when the zed is parked in the sun My redzed had a steel shiftknob on it when I bought it. Christ did it get hot in the sun..... I used to put a stubby holder over it but you still couldn't touch it without burning your hand. I needed to carry a bottle of water and a rag to cool it down before I could drive with it.
stop parking in the sun. The only thing i leave out in the weather is the reasonable priced (free) car hyundai excell work commuter.
Insightful but I think that in summer the "giant heat-sink" is most likely the entire car, and in my case, its black leather interior.
Country pubs don't have underground parking.... The majority of my zed driving invariably ends up at a country pub somewhere for a "counter lunch". Undercover parking is not in abundance in small towns, so even if you park in the shade, when you return to the zed it is ALWAYS in the sun
One major difference.... After the zed's been sitting in the sun, you DON'T have to put your hand on the redhot targa roof to drive home
I'm in like Flinn, thats a B. E. A. Utiful piece of work, I've been wanting to swap mine out for something tasteful, but god knows most of whats out there is uninspiring, and straight tacky. So, yes, lock me in, PM sent (shortly).
Yeah I used to have a solid stainless shifter as part of my Ab-Flug gated system, that would be like clutching the heart of the sun itself on a hot day, and it would take about 20 minutes to cool down to the point where you could actually leave your hand on it. That's a nice looking shifter but I know from experience that it has a problem. Even if you put something over the shifter so it wasn't in direct sunlight, even with the hot interior of a car it was painful to touch. Ben
nice work man! i can appreciate good machining skills, as im keen to become a fitter and turner..of sorts haha. looks the goods! and for the people winging about having a hot shifter during the summer, harden up. just play hot potato shifting. who needs a short shifter? i made one last year for my mates honda, just polished mild steel. and has a brass inner thread so it will tighten up and stay put made it so the thread was right up the top of the shifter so it wouldn't stick up like a dildo either haha
