FMIC with dual intake. Has anyone fitted without extensions?

ok had a go at fitting it all today.

with the oil cooler in stock place, there was no chance of fitting either side in. The 3A racing pods are massive compared to my apexi one ive been using.

So I removed the oil cooler to see if theyd fit without it.
It was a tight fit. The angle of hte black intake pipe isnt ideal. The aux fans plastic shroud is in the way, and you really have to force the first silicon join on. In the end it went on, but the rear end was being stretched a fair bit. I think if I file down some of the aux fan shroud itd fit much better. But yeah it fit in, and didnt protrude past halfway. So theyd both fit.

As for the oil cooler, I cant relocate it to side mount spot. Gave a pic of the modded bar ive got on so you can see why. Only place it would fit is sideways attached to the front mount :p As in rather than side to side having it running top to bottom on either side of the front mount.

I put it all back together afterwards, refit the single intake. I attached the oil cooler to the back of the front mount with some wire running through one fin, to see what the effects on oil temps would be from this. Since itd be fed by the hot air coming straight from the intercooler. It raised oil temperatures by about 4-8 degrees fahrenheait.

So temps currently sitting at 184deg f. Thats 85 degrees celsius.
I think thats fine. So having it attached should be fine. Ill jsut have to see what its like on a real hot day.

So it can be done with a fmic, dual maf, and bigass 3A racing pods, but the oil cooler must be relocated.

If using smaller pods, it might be possible. My apexi power intake would probably do the job, but ill be using the 3A ones.

Thanks for testing it out, attila. :)

Aye, that does look like a tight fit. Tech had a lot more room to work with once his aux fan was removed (from the pics he provided) - which makes absolute sense if he had his A/C removed - but even he had to trim either intake pipes for the bigger pods to fit.

My oil cooler is relocated to the SMIC position, so that should be okay.. but I'll run into the same problem with the auxillary fan shroud - which means that some sort of trimming (of either the pipes and/or the shroud) will be necessary. I'll be switching over to the 3As from the Apexi P.I. as well for my dual intake setup.

Re temps: you'll get a chance to stress the system soon, as it's beginning to get quite warm here in Sydney ;)

Re frontbar mods: Doh! -It looks like you've also filled out the foggies. I was going to suggest a powertrix foglight duct - where you'd mount the oil cooler to wherever the duct leads to.. but the reo bar mount for the foggies will probably get in the way - dunno, I've never really looked at the duct properly . I know Rob BlackBeast has them on his car atm.. so I'll find out for you.

    Keep the pics coming. :zlove:

got a quote for the nistune fit and dyno. 700. cant afford that atm :p He also suggested I fix a few things i mentioned could be problems.

so i wont fit it properly for a while.

Unless I find someone with nistune who can flash a basic performance tune onto it for me, and help me double the afm value.

Then when I eventually fix those things ill get a proper tune done, pretty broke atm though so i dont think ill do that for a few months.

Anyone willing to lend a hand or some knowledge with nistune? :D

Other option would be to buy the selin translator and another maf, but that would be like 400 already, almost the cost of the tune.

terrible place to have the intakes behind the front mount.

custom intakes to the smic location is the best way to go even if your bar is closed off .you dont want air directly hitting the air filters anyway.

    or

and/or even put oil cooler in front of radiator to one side.

my car didn't seem to have any issues with where and how the setup was oriented. Having the intakes in the direct path of airflow will cause issues with ambient readouts to the maf wire. Essentially you will end up blowing more air through the maf than it can read. From the factory even, the intakes are covered when you install a single pop charger. They purposely put a block shield in front of the intakes to ensure distortion is not present. You also have to consider airflow being drawn through the FMIC area as well. Not saying that its the optimum setup but it surely does work without issues.

I'd rather stick it behind the intercooler (as explained by tech@epr). The filters look too low in the smic position, I'd be worried about sucking up some water.

no doubt it will work .. just looking at optimum setup for performance .

my ones will sit a little higher though under the headlights.
I dont drive in the rain :)

not to mention you are lengthening the piping which is even more restriction in the setup. The images shown on Z1s site completely block the oil cooler where its relocated to the sidemount position. So right there you have two negatives to over come before you can even begin to break even.

Idealy if you can run the intakes to the foglight ducts with a square panel (has the most cross section for air induction) you see the most gains of all. Its just not worth the risk to even run a filter right off the compressor housing being that close to the exhaust manifold and open to debris from the ground and so forth.

not a fan of the z1 setup ..just another option for people.

although I am going to look at twin oil coolers in smic locations with air filters in there as well .should be enough room with right size coolers without them interfering with their job.

Fair call. My zed is a daily so I always look at a compromise.
You wouldn't drive your zed much around here, I'm starting to forget what the sun looks like :)

yea as long as you can do it where everything is getting what it needs in that confined area more power to ya. Thus far though from what I see that kit offered causes more problems than gains

I am surprised nobody else has asked why are you going to so much effort to try and convert to a twin pod setup? You have nothing to gain from it.

Your current setup (with apexi power intake) should be a perfect fit, and perfectly functional.

    1. Because i enjoy it.
    2. Because z1's half price elbow kit and the american dollar tricked me :p
    3. Because oneday the zed might get to the stage where it will be beneficial

    :D
