okay guys back again, and starting the hunt on whats around to buy for my 300zx (meaning the whole car) after you have settled me on the reliability issue and how they go as a daily drive I have another question. Is there any reason why so many Z'd motors get rebuilt with seeming low km's on them, I have seen some advertised that they have done 160 thou and less and have been freshly rebuilt (reminds me of a 2 stroke dirt bike advert) and have seen others that have well over 200 thou on the clock and still running strong on the original motor. If people are rebuilding for more power then I understand that fully. and I also understand the these cars do not like to be neglected service wise (probably answered my own question there) are there any other reason or things I should look out for when out kicking tires in the hunt for my manual TT 300ZX

looking at TTs right? They're all import motors and the odo reading is pretty much never correct. For example mine says just under 120,000km but it's probably closer to 300k. Look at the physical condition of the car instead of relying on kms...

The 'low kms' cars you see are likely imports and have had the odo's wound back before importation. Its funny when you see every car on carsales has ~60000kms on it:rolleyes:

Well that's news to me I new imports had the k's wound right back but I didn't know all TT's were imported. see you only learn if you ask.... and thats good info to know so i don't look like a dick when buying one ("thinking "Geez I am glad I found this site" twiddles thumbs)

The only zeds sold by nissan in australia were 4 seater non turbos. That means all two seaters, slicktops, convertibles and TT's were imported. There were some 4 seater NAs imported but that was before the import laws were changed.

all factory TT motors are imports... however some aus-spec models have had TT conversions so have a locally delivered chassis and an import motor. Aus-specs only came in NA 2+2 form.

and lastly (Coming from NZ I have lived with Japanese imports all my life) there are 2 other factors with imports beyond the winding back of odometers.

1 A lot of Japanese city driving can be slow almost gridlock kms, this clocks up hours but low kms, giving a false representation of how much runtime an engine has done.

2 A lot of Japanese cars have very little maintenance conducted eg oil changes etc. due to their licensing laws cars are not normally on their roads long enough for it to be an issue,

The result is often engines with jelly for oil and huge hours but low KM's

Look out for receipts for evidence of motor rebuild and major maintenance like 100k service.

A rebuild could mean anything from a just a strip-n-clean job with new rings, or rebore + balance + forged internals etc. (God bless marketing!)

Search the tech section for an insightful buyers guide.

Many mods are defectable eg BOV, some coilovers, depending on your state laws so that is also something you want to look at.

    Good luck :)

agree with zxdevil... cant trust k's

HAVE TO AGREE WITH ZXDEVIL.... in my experience, k's on the clock of most 1990's imported/JDM sports cars here in Australia are dodgy... many were wound back prior to export (eg. a 150,000 + would get wound back to a bit under 100,000)..... so take them with a grain of salt.

my car got imported in 2002 and its got 170 000 k's on it, do you think it was wound back at all?

Who knows? depends on the overall condition of the car, 170k kms is not heaps but its getting there so weather or not they are genuine you'll likely be seeing signs of wear.. Its more applicable for all the cars which have a sub 100k km reading on the odo but have clearly been to the moon and back..

the thing is he moved after he sold it to me, and what i didnt know what it was a repairable write off. Not that easy to get by. you wouldnt think you would rip off a 17 year old kid on the first car.
