My advice to you is, you have an NA, don't try to make it into a race-car, just be content to get it into as good a shape as possible and enjoy it for what it is, a glorious open road cruiser that turns heads everywhere it goes.
There are limited mods that you may wish to do, but if I were you, I would talk with Mark(Jedi-77 on this forum)and see what he has done with his NA(it is probably the best example of a cared for NA in this country, and Mark is a sensible, approachable guy).:zlove::zlove:

Relax and put the replies about

having bought a "lemon" in perspective. There are hardly any ~20 year ol high performance cars that dont need some work. Once the preventative maintenance is done, they are as reliable as any other car of similar age.

Accept that you'll have to twist a few spanners to keep it running well. Also accept that they aren't appreciating assets increasing in value like a GTHO does.

But take solace in the fact that there isn't anything that can go wrong with your zed that:
    • Hasn't already happened to someone else on the forum and
    • doesn't already have a technical article on how to fix it :zlove:

Parts are cheap and in plentiful supply locally and from the USA, advice is free on here. But don't take the word of any one person, do your research. use the tech section, read the service manual and use the search function to investigate problems similar to what you are having.

Keep it all in context however, about 95% of the threads in Z-Related_Technical forum are "help me". Very few people post up "My zed is running fine!!!" - Thats not newsworthy!!! Also filter the "Doom and gloom" replies to your threads. Some people like to complain about how hard these cars are to fix/maintain. A true enthusiast sees this as a labour of love:cool:

If you do use a mechanical workshop to get things done, check them out here first. Ask to speak to other customers. Sly mechs see these cars and their worried new owners coming... You are in Vic right? Contact people like forum member Tektrader for quality advice on work you can't do...

PS: My website (Click my sig pic) has checklists of what work is required and when. This is also in the tech section on this site but you have to dig around to find it all...

If it was Simons car you bought, dont get too concerned about it. The car is in very good nick. Lots of zeds have huge issues, What you have outlined is very minor.

Get those three things fixed and enjoy. I am sure you wont have any majors issues with that car.

Haha, I was wondering how long it would take for a comment like that. Relax, Despite coming from a commodore to the Zed I'm not like a typical commodore driver wanting to make his fully sick VN auto NA 6 into a beast. As much as I'd love something that pulls harder than a 14 year old boy who just discovered the internet, I'm well aware that it's not coming from an NA. This is my cruising car, Mods will be limited to stereo, interior, and maybe some tame engine and handling work (Exhaust, lower, wider wheels, etc).

That made me laugh! Very true that everything working perfect is no news. I've definitely got motor oil in my veins, And I enjoy getting my hands dirty and learning how to fix stuff, I just got a bit touchy and concerned when stuff started going wrong. These past few replies have me motivated and happy again :D

It was indeed Simon's. As I said earlier, I got paranoid and jumped to conclusions that I'd wasted my money... I've relaxed again.

Cheers for the replies guys, I'm far less concerned now. I just can't wait to get it fixed now so I can get my s*** together and organise a great ocean road cruise! On that note, It's quite a nice day, I think it's time for a drive.

Did the seller give you a RWC?? how the hell does a car pass a RWC if the odometer doesnt work and if the mirrors dont work proply?? i smell a rat.
And mate i hate to tell you but no chance in hell the car has only done 80,000 km lol pull the cluster out, ill bet its been wound back.

i just kept reading lol of course if its Simon's car it been wound back. the guy has kind of a bad rep on here mate for dodgy sales, hents thats why hes banned.

Simon would have changed out the cluster. His had stainless guage rings etc etc. He would have bought a new one off someone to put back in the car.

It is not a matter of being dodgy at all, buy a new cluster you cant control whats on it can you.

All these ODO's are wrong with very few exceptions. When I totally rebuilt my car it magically started at 100K again. :D

Just cause he is banned doesnt make him a crook or a bad person. Wind back the bullshit.

check out the tech section, odometer tends to be a bad solder joint or a dodgy speed sensor, neither of which is a huge drama.
I wasn't a huge fan of simon as I felt he talked a lot of crap but his zed's were top notch, I think you've got a winner in the long run.

yeah I agree, i missed all the low300zx dramas, i had a couple of dealings with him, one went smoothly, one was a bit of a drama (that got sorted) so no probs, anyone would think he's the big bad wolf the way some crew carry on, htfu [TIS]
By the way, welcome to the forum Fonzie, it sounds like the car is otherwise pretty nice, i wouldn't worry about a few minor problems, just get them sorted and enjoy the car and the experience.

i guess it all depends if simon sold it him putting him under the impression the 80,000km are genuine or not. but doesn't really matter, they guy would have kept his zed in a lot better condition than most. im sure it will be in good condition apart from a few minor generic issues :)

try reseting ur trip a few times, a mate did this to his when his odometer stopped working and then it worked fine after that

I've done some reading on it, But all the issues seem to be about the odo AND trip bits not working... On mine, it's only the odo that's faulty. I've chatted to a few of the members here and there's a bit of resentment, but for the most part I think I've bought a well looked after car.

I did purchase it under the impression that it had 80k on the clock, But it's very true that the condition of the car tells a far more important story than that little odometer reading. I judged him to be a genuine bloke, and the fact that he's still in contact (Exchanged a few emails etc) strengthens that. If he'd wound it back for the purposes of sale, He would gain nothing by helping me out.

First thing I tried, No luck though.

    Totally agree!
You just need to disagree with Moderators and be outspoken(it helps if you are accused of "conspiracy to destroy the forum" and "issuing threats to Moderators", as well).
Simon has never owned a "dud" Z32 to my knowledge.[TIS]

One fix that often works, is to flush(spray)Contact Cleaner into the electric motor and around the gear/worm drive(they sometimes get full of fine grit that clogs the works).:zlove:

I actually miss his posts........ they always made you stop & think ;)

Simons car was extreamly well maintained and loved by Simon, it was driven hard but received the best that money could buy on all occasions.... he never short changed that zed in any way or form.
Money was NOT an issue when it came to that zed

I'm sure it pulled a few heart strings to sell it on and wouldnt have been sold to you unless Simon felt it was going to a good home

Simons Profile should you want to see more pics/writeups of your car.......

    odomoter not working

I had a similar problem, found a tiny bit a material stopping the cog. I heard an intermittent click (if you listen carefully when driving)
Take the fascia out give it a clean and check for any broken or missing cogs.
its not a big job, nice and easy for your first repair.:)

the car you have bought was a great car. he had done alot of great mods to that car but i think he has reverted it back to stock to sell. good condition car you should be happy with it. this car was his baby he never even drove it in the wet. litrally if it was even spitting it would not come out...
