well everyone I have bad news to say, this morning on my way to work, i made a silly mistake that has devastated me and my pride and joy. I take full responsiblitly for my actions in causing this accident and i just hope that my car can be repaired and back on the road one day.

So what happened Adam, well on my daily commute to work on a road i travel everyday, i was stuck in heavy travel and being the safe driver i am i usual coast with the travel fine without issue, but today was different for some reason, when the car in front of me moved forward, i followed and then stupidly glanced at my phone on handsfree which i know i shouldnt do at all but i did and do often which was my mistake. After a sec or 2 of glancing at my phone I lifted my head to find the car in front of me stopped and i was going way way to fast and though I tried to slam my brakes on it was too little to late and bang.

I am extremely devastated at the destruction Ive caused and i know i was playing with fire and deserve to be punished for my actions. Luckily noone was hurt of course but I still can't believe this has happened.

The car is now in the possession of the insurance company and I just pray that it can be fixed otherwise I will do everything in my power to get my car back and try and fix it myself.

Im sorry to have to show everyone such a terrrible hurific photo of a much loved 300zx but this should serve as a warning to not look at your phone even for a instance when driving a car on the road.

Sorry to hear Adam, don't be too hard on yourself, accidents happen mate.
Hopefully it's all repairable & your back on the road in no time, fingers definitely crossed for an easy process with the insurance company.

Thanks tim, i hope so too. I know some of the parts on my car that were damaged you cant get in australia and need to be sourced from either the us or japan which could cause the insurance company to just write the car off.

Its repairable mate, the parts shouldn't be to hard to get hold of in australia. Good luck!

Hi Adam, If the picture shows the full extent of the damage, She's gonna repair ok. As long as there's no inner guard damage or rail damage, it to be a simple repair. Possibly only need a bonnet and parkers. The guards should repair. If the front bar is urethane, some heat and reshaping should get it back in shape. If the bar is glass, it will need to go back in the mold for repairs. Good luck

For those wondering, the front bar was oem uthrene 2kspec bar. I would assume the kn pod filter would be crushed under the impact area and the car would crank but not start, i would guess the maf sensor is damaged maybe.

Luckily the 2kspec headlights were not hit but i did see a little bit of deris inside the light housing. The reo bar and fog lights were completely destoryed and the nose panel was bent along with the bonnet. I also couldnt release the bonnet latch so i couldnt see the damage on the radiator support rail which i would suspect is bent slightly.

Thanks col i will update this thread when things progress. The car is fully insured by shannons and worth $13k value so i am covered for the most part, it just depends if the car can or cannot be fixed which is what i am now waiting for the assessor to determine over the next few weeks.

I have been holding onto a genuine 2k urethane bumper for a while now. If you are in real need for another, I might part with it. It looks to be the same color as yours 2

Sorry to see that, I know you've put a lot of work into it and know how easy it is to be angry at yourself. But with the right repairs it will be as good as it was before. At this point it's probably worth going to a repair shop that specialises in older and classic cars, probably a good thing you're insured with Shannons.

I would be checking the headlight buckets and radiator support thoroughly, not a hard job to replace the whole assembly and still quite easy to find straight ones in one piece. Might also be worth upping your insurance for future as parts for these will only get more expensive and harder to find.

To me it seems everything from radiator support panel forward might be damaged for the bonnet to be bent up like that and lights to be out of alignment. It might look worse in the photo compared to in person.
Lucky the 2k spec lights aren't broken, not sure about the mounting bracket underneath though, if bent or broken, they are no longer available according to COZ and the local Nissan quoted 3.5k each! I guess they don't know that these are no longer available. Also, even to source these second hand is no easy task and price will be right up there if available.

All other metal items should be available new from Nissan and they shouldn't be too expensive. Need a good panel beater though to weld everything back up properly so that all the panel gaps are perfect.

It looks repairable to me but the insurance might have a different opinion.

These cars should not be daily drivers now.

I want to thank everyones comments and hopes for a successful repair on my Z. I havent been sleeping very well since thw accident with visions of the impact and the damage my car suffered haunting me deeply. I have a ton of anixty weighing me down atm as the future of my car is still uncertain but im just trying to think positively at this point and hoping for the desired outcome I want which is the repair return of my car but its a 50 / 50 at this point in time whether that will occur or not and its killing me.

So i finally spoke over the phone to one of shannons representitives today who asked me about choosing my own repairer for the repair job but I unfortunately don't know any reputatable panel shops myself and I havent got around to asking anyone on here if reputatable panel shop could be suggested to send the car to for assessment.

So i asked the gentlemen to organise the repair quote for me and he stated he would be sending it to a highly reputatable panel shop in spotswood and I should hear from them next week or so about the next step in the repair process.

He also gave me a breif rundown on how the system normally processes from here. He explained to me that the car will be quoted on its current condition for resale (i think) and then once shannons gets a repair quote from the repair shop they will determine if the car is worth repairing or not. I just hope the difference is large enough to warrant them to fix the car but I did try and explain that the car might have parts like the front bar that wouldnt be a easy find here in Australia and he said he would get the repairer to contact me with any questions they have.

I was considering calling the panel shop myself tomorrow as an couresty call to them and help provide information that would aid them in the repair process with parts and so forth. Or do you guys think I should just wait and let them do what they need to do to quote the job without interferace from me?

I believe the insurance company should have a list of your mods. Else, they will quote on parts for your VIN specifically.
For eg, if your car is <2K spec, then no 2k bumper bar or lights or anything that was from a 2k Z.
I would explain this to the insurance rep so that they understand and convey the message to the panel beater that your car is modified with OEM upgrades from 2k spec Z and leave it with them.

    That's my understanding.

Exactly what i was thinking as well, i checked my listed mods my online policy and its just a mess really, with only a fraction on mods i emailed them on listed in each section and some parts are not fully typed out. For example in my body modifications the list stated "version front bar and indicator set" which is not what i email them on body mods years ago. Im worried this incorrect information might prevent the correct parts being replaced for the repair. Thank god the xexon headlights are clearly stated.

I dont know if i should notify shannons now and get the mods list corrected or tell the repairer instead.

Maybe try both and see what happens. It's better than doing nothing.
Keep the finger on the pulse so to speak.

My friend has an S12 Gazelle with all the goodies from 89 last version, much like your Z.
It got rear ended and insurance wanted to write it off because no parts. Good thing is he already had spares stashed and told insurance to repair and he supplied the parts. He insisted and got a full re-spray while at it! This depends on the panel beater. Some are robotic morons though and will not deviate from the blinker setting.

If you wish to do some other repairs while the car is at the panel beater, speak with the insurance company and the panel beater, if the panel beater says 'NO' then honestly go elsewhere. That's what I would do.

You want a panel beater who's not only good but a bit open minded and able to negotiate something outside of the insurance repair, with yourself. Just saying in case you wish to do something else while the car is in.
