Here it is, my new project, 1990 300zx TT / MT 2+0 . silver, leather. 17's and pretty much stock everything else.

As the title would imply, this car will be kept 100% street legal, the goal being to extract as much power for the least amount of mods. one reason for doing that is to see how good the stock gear really is and also to keep mods to a minimum for legal reasons.

Im not suggesting that my blue zed or any other zed is not legal, but i would like to make this one extra legal :S

The first reverse modification began today with the removal of a pod filter and fitment of an original airbox with new filters. Next stop is a standard front bar as this one has been modified to suit a pod filter.

Ive decided against using my abflug front abr on this one, it doesnt seem in keeping with the project.

depending on how i go with customers cars i might pullt he engine out this weekend, then it can sit around at the machine shop for how ever long that will be.

For wheels ill be fitting my 17 x 8.5 and 17 x 9.5 modena's (thanks Mike) once i get them repaired and re finished.

witht he interior im hoping to be able to restore as much of the factor leather as possible and just replace the worn panels and also do the armrest lid.

Under the bonnet it is extremely original and unmodified, its quite refreshing to see one with all the original plastic clips and stuff where they should be and not broken. Judging by the condition of the engine and engine bay in general i reckon the odo reading of 127xxx could be accurate.

I like the idea here Niall, but may i ask what the point of it all would be? we've got a stack of Zeds on here already that are stock in good nick, with cat backs and boosted. (and what power range they have)

Having a whole other Zed and doing backward mods (your words) seams a bit excessive to see what a stock Zed can pull with these mods.

Just curious as to what your actually hoping to achieve/prove with this project mate. :)

No, but then again, neither is a cat back exhaust as it's not standard either. So we are pretty restricted here. Let alone boosting it higher than our stock 9psi, as that's illegal here also to my understanding.

25th anniversary came with 17x9's on the rear. Thus 9.5" should be legal as long as your not increasing the track width, which depends on offsets, etc, etc. It should be ok.

just becuase something isn't OE doesn't make it illegal. There is legislation in place saying that you can use non OE parts as long as they are an equivalent. It's replacement not modification. The exhaust would still have to comply with emissions (cats) and noise levels

Rollin, I believe that wheels can be 1.3 times factory width without permits as long as they don't sit outside the guards. Worth checking your local rules though.

its hard to rationalise anything with these cars Ben, i cant even justify owning two TT's.

the reason for the non modification is that i think that most of the usual bolt on mods dont to a dam thing at the 300rwhp mark to be honest. my car showed little gains on stock turbos' with all bolt ons fitted.

this one is really quite honest and original so it seems shame to start removing the OEM stuff for aftermarket gear.

as for what you said about heaps of stock boosted zeds, what power figure do they have, has anyone done 320rwhp with those mods?

i think its possible and id like to find out. The other thing that you miss when you have a modified car like my blue one, is the response of the stock setup. id really like to have a zed that is fun to drive , that you can give it a bootfull without going into tripple figures, my blue car can break the legal national speed limit in 2nd gear and you dont feel the kick unless your in high rpms and so high speed

yeah ill have to look up the exact wording in relation to the exahsut but i think its something like " exhaust modificatiions are permitted so long as the exhaust has not been modified in such a way to decrease efficiency, resulting in more noise and more emissions"

Catback exhaust - legal if it meets EPA noise regulations
POD filter - Legal if it's the non-oiled type and meets EPA noise regulations (induction noise)

and if the pod is secured correctly, that seems to be a favourite defect item up here is a non secure pod. lol

My understanding (in QLD) is you can go up to 20% wider/narrower - and 5% taller/shorter outside rolling diameter than stock legally.

i forgot to add in the last post, that id also like a zed that i can drive over pseed bumps and in driveways, i havent been able to take my blue zed to some of my friends places becaus e i wouldnt get in the driveway,

id like a stress free daily useable zed.

I understand Niall, i've also been down the road of owning 2 TT's at the same time and while at the time i NEEDED both, i had trouble justifying them. lol.

Honestly, i can't think of members' names off the top of my head, but i definately have seen posts from members here that have cat back's and boosted Zeds that have hovered around the 320hp mark. Maybe they've been lucky, as my Zed only had 303hp at 15psi with stock everything except for pod and cat back when i first bought it.

However you do have another point of view that i haven't experience quite yet of having aftermarket turbos in relation to responsiveness and lag, v's stock. So that's fair that you want to be able to compare to two.

Like i said mate, i like your idea and hope it gives some positive results for both yourself and the rest of us as a good OEM v's bolt-ons comparison. :):zlove: Keep us posted.
