Since my engine arrived today (finally!) I thought I might as well start up my thread for the build.

I will be documenting as much as I can over at Motorswaps and just post the most interesting piccies and details here.

If you've missed my constant prattling about the engine here it is again:

    Nissan VH45DE
Came out of a Infinity Q45 luxury car
    206kW @ 6000rpm
    400Nm @ 4000rpm (50Nm more than the 1UZFE and 12Nm more than the VG30DETT)
    4494cc's
DOHC 32 Valve, with sodium filled exhaust valves
Have timing chains rather than belts
    VVT on the intake
    Forged rods and crank
    6 Bolt mains
    BIG crank girdle
Have been known to rev to 8500+rpm for sustained periods with no damage with just a change of cams and valve springs

Piccy of the engine in my (little) shed

Will do Niall, appreciate your input when I get to it :)

Haven't got the 'rolla yet, guy had some family illness and couldn't get the road worth last week so I should get it this week.

Already sold chunks of the old Z engine, all the important bits that make it run anyway :p

As for how I'm going to attack it I'm thinking:

    • Rip old engine out
    • Paint engine bay
    • Give the new engine a good going over, new chain guids and maybe new bearings and bolts
    • Make/buy/obtain gearbox adaptor plate
    • Dummy fit engine and make engine mounts with my mate Niall
    • Make new extractors or take a BFH to the old ones to make them fit
    • Work out all the wiring
    • Work out what I will do with the bonnet :p
    • Get it approved and mod plated
    • Go to the drags

    Good onya mate

Im very interested in this thread, i love engine swaps.

Apart from the new zorst, will you be modifying any of the engine before impant? Is the final objective to make it charged? If so what do you plan to do to the compression?

Keep us up to date :)

It would be a little bit bogan if it came out of a HQ Holden, but since it is still Nissan it's going to be very cool! hehe

Id probably do most of the preassembly any dummying up before you paint the engine bay , incase you need to do any modificatioons, adding or removal or brackets and just so you dont scratch it.

make sure you replace the plastic timing chain guides

Make sure you replace the plastic timing chain guides with metal backed ones,
else could be a very expensive exercise.

Budget is dependent on homebrew or professional

I am having my Zed converted to VH45 power. I expect it finished within the next couple of weeks.

I am not doing a home-brew but I am having it "professionally" done by MRC Dyno Service in Castle Hill in Sydney. So the price will be some what higher than a do-it-yourself ( lets just say it is a long term investment as I don't intend to ever sell my zed - only when they take the keys from my stone cold hands ).

The objective of the conversion we are doing is "OEM" grade as if it came from the factory in 2008. So everything is being engineered to line up and balance perfectly as if that is the way Nissan intended... That is a true "Spec 8". Hence the conversion is being ( over ) engineered for full engineering compliance.

Mark at MRC is considering packaging the conversion as a "fixed" price offering ( the "fixed" price is yet to be decided and is "variable" depending on the gearbox type and specifications e.g. twin turbo ).
Note; he is giving real "consideration" to packaging a VH45 Z32 (& R31, R32, R33) conversion; no promises but real "consideration".

My car is the prototype, he has also started doing his own VH45 powered R31 Skyline with twin turbo ( mine will remain non-turbo ). We have an agreement on the price for the project ( which I can't reveal ). This is a one off arrangement because of the 1st prototype status.

I have to be careful what intellectual property I give away.
    I will give you a couple of hints as to what to look out for;

    1) replace the timing chain guards with the newer metal backed ones !!! , because the ones we get here are mostly the early engines and these plastic ones will break or are already broken.

    2) on some engines there is a restricter plate in the exhaust system, remove this.

    3) consider making the cross member the center point of modifications and thereby using off the shelf engine mounts because what will most likely require replacing in the future. Also easier to get the engine lower in the car and under the bonnet.

    4) the power steering pump has two half, one for hicas and one for the front, depending on your zed you may need to have the hicas part of the pump disabled.

    5) expect the air conditioning pump to be DEAD, I purchased two engines from different suppliers and both pumps are ceased.

    6) don't do a home-brew sump get it made professionally.

    7) for an auto consider using the Q45 box instead of the Z32.

I have done a lot of research into this project, and come up with the Shift-At-Will maps to correspond with using a Q45 gearbox instead of a Z32 box, due to the torque.
