    The result of hydrolocking...

Still ran OK - just noisy

Just be happy you got it out in time...otherwise you'd be shopping for a new block as well.

heat it up and straighten it up then refit. She'll be right.

I wonder if I can straighten it in the benchvice with the torch and mallet?

When I was younger, I wondered if offset conrods would actually be a performance mod as they might theoretically build revs quicker. Dumb ideas you get sometimes.

I can't imagine the bore faired much better.................

The bore is fine. No markings.

Once it happened, it only drove another 5km before I parked it in the garage and swapped the engine.

So were the revs low with it locked up?

Maybe hydrolocked is the wrong term. It didn't actually stop like when you cross a river.

It was idling when it inducted some water. The engine didn't stop but faltered a bit and then started making a new noise. I would not have picked that the conrod was bent like it was.

Makes you think about driving in heavy rain with exposed pod filters.

and I thought water injection was a performance thing

    :p

I know bent rods are from water. But how much water does it need to take in before the rod will bend?

It wouldnt be easy for water to get from the pod into the cylinder. Does the water build up in the plenum then goes in all at once causing enough for a bent?

Unlikely to hydro lock from rain itself ;)

Different story if you "induct" water ...........

Your more likely to quench steel rings with rain or by using water injection over a long term period with stock rings (heated steel becomes brittle when quenched with water)

Assuming this is an NA - (otherwise the turbo's won't be happy- lol)
Water will travel into the plenum and pool in the valve seats, the valve opens and you get a sudden rush of 50ml or more of water. The piston then hits the water when the valves close and the conrod generally buckles

How much head space is at TDC, less than a 100ml.......so there's not much room for compression once that void begins filling with water.

Say anything after 30ml in one cylinder and your looking at trouble with compression ratios alone.

Avoid inducting water of large amounts into your cylinders ............:rolleyes2:

Nice pics..........a lot of force suddenly went into making that conrod....the crank journal would have to be a bit thinner now

How did that much water got in to the intake when engine was idling?

Were you actually crossing a river when that happened?

Very interesting how Did it happen ? Driving through giant River do you have pics of your filter setup ? Is your z slammed on the ground ?

    Nothing that heroic.

Just an accident while working under the bonnet.

Start with a small job of replacing injector connectors, end up replacing engine!
