local noob calling for some advice .... again :D

Ok I have two engines side by side one a manual and the other an auto . Both TT's . I have looked at the intake cams in both engines and cant seem to see an obvious difference

Do the numbers on the cam actually mean anything or designate what cam it is ?

The lobes on both seem the same also ? I havent looked at exhaust cams yet .

So fire away fella's ... you know you want to :D

There is a coloured band on the cams. This tells you what they are. I can't remember the colours, but it has been posted up before.

    Cam Markings

Each cam will be marked with either RI,RE,LI,LE Right Inlet, Right Exhaust Ect. You may have to run over the markings with a wire brush

Thanks for that . But more concerned with id'ing the manual from the auto cams ;) Its no biggy just tossing the idea of changing them over to suit the manual turbo's .

    Eric, a clarification please -
On an auto engine, should there be yellow bands on the intake cams and greenyblue bands on the exhaust cams?
    As in this pic -

Whereas the manual engine will have greenyblue bands on both intake and exhaust?
As in this pic, barely discernable on the 2 LHS camshafts uppermost in the pic -

Because the exhaust cams are the same part for auto and manual, wouldn't you end up with both colours on an auto engine?

I'm only asking for the benefit of future searchers :)

That is correct. All Na cams and all exhaust cams are green. Manual tt exhaust cams are also green as all exhaust cams are the same.

S1 TT auto intake cams are yellow.

S2 TT and NA intake cams are red.

Can this be removed when cleaned up by engineers ?

I'm an engineer and I'm terrible at cleaning things :p

I guess if they use a horrible enough cleaning agent it might come off, it is often very faint and stained from the oil containments

I went through this, the yellow auto bands are easy to spot but the greenyblue manual bands are harder to see.

Look at them in daylight. If still not sure, wash them with prep wash or turps etc then let them dry and look again.

( be sure to get some oil back onto them straight afterwards )
