Labour: Dismantle & inspect V6 short motor (was given a short block with pistons, rods and oil pump only). Remove crank pulley off
crankshaft. Inspect oiling system for modifications. Measure block & crankshaft.
Wash parts. Prep for machine shop.$390.00

Machine shop: Acid bath block. Sonic test block. Rough cut bore cylinders.
Crack test & polish crankshaft. (will this remove the nitride coating?)$554.40

Apparently it's a rough cut and hasn't even been properly bored and honed. I asked if it had been torque-plate bored and was told it gets torque-plate honed. WTF?

I think this guy is trying it on big time, and I can't believe his prices.

    Anyone care to comment?

try crown engines in canningvale. Or south side graham quoted me $60 a bore and hone per cylinder
Acid wash was 45 from memory and I know graham has a torque plate because I made it :)

It's already been done and that is what he is trying to charge me.

Yes that is average price if you don't shop around and in a hurry. I have a faxed quote from few place local and very similar what you are being charged.

yeah that is pretty pricey. I think from memory i was looking at around $900 for a rotating assembly balance, block cleaned, bored, honed and decked, and rods resized. i think your getting ripped. Should get quotes before you take your stuff in. If he has taken it to a third party then that may explain the prices. If this is the same extreme performance that i am thinking of, then i wouldn't be getting them to do anything. I remember a mate had a 15k 355ci stroker built there about 7 years ago, that turned the rollers to a huge 290rwhp!

Well you guys have got it good there, from memory the machine shop I went to charged $55 a bore, 120 for acid cleaning, 450 for rotating assem balance, 180 for crank grind, can't remember what the soniq cost. 120 set up block and measure, 200 to deck the block.
mmmmmmm won't be back and it took 2 months to get it back

Hi mate, i don't know nothing about the price, but i work in an engine reconditioning workshop so i can tell you something.

Machine shop: Acid bath block. Sonic test block. Rough cut bore cylinders.
Crack test & polish crankshaft. (will this remove the nitride coating?)$554.40
Don't worry about coating, if it need just to be polished it isn't a problem, we're talking about removing something like 0.0005mm material...

Apparently it's a rough cut and hasn't even been properly bored and honed. I asked if it had been torque-plate bored and was told it gets torque-plate honed. WTF?

If you're going to .50mm it's strange a rough cut, you bore just once and that's it... but they probably means that they left more material for the honing process, it isn't necessary to bore with the plate on, just when u hone it, the distorsion created by the torque plate it's not that much, otherwise all the non-torqueplated engine should seize up :)

Sorry for my english guys but i'm italian, just moved here for work :)

at a local machine shop i got the engine chemically cleaned, bored, honed, decked block, new welsh plugs and block painted for $440 really good job to, then in tamworth i got the rotating assembely balanced, bearing clearances done and crank linished for $560

Thanks for the comments guys. Just to be clear what I have back is a block that is rough cut,not final torque honed. Not assembled, no rods or pistons, just a polished crank, sonic'd and rough bored block. For just over $1000.

Your English is better than many on here so I wouldn't worry too much :)

Does seem a little on the pricey side. This for overall, and each of the steps. Ask them for a better breakdown if you what some closure, but better off cutting losses and going to some one that is reasonable.
