Seem to be having a problem starting my zed problem started tonight i was driving home and my stereo just turned off for no reason. no big deal but then i went to go for a drive later and car wouldn't turn over then it would try and turn over and made a very strange noise as if something was arcing out, no fuses are blown.
Got it to start then drove 40m down the road and it started to cough splutter then it stopped.
eventually got it to start and struggled along as if it was about to die,
any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

The sterio but is a little strange... Have you checked all the fuses and relays in the engine bay?

The not starting bit could be a faulty PTU.

    Certainly a strnage one....

    Check battery and also

check the voltage regulator charging rate. You should see ~12V with key out of the ignition, then approx 13.8 - 14ish when engine running.

Sounds like either battery is dying (not enough charge which can cause all sorts of strange electrical things) or voltage regulator in the alternation is failing.

No starting could be either PTU or CAS (CAS connection)

Could be as simple as a loose battery cable. Either on the battery, on the starter, ground point. It would get very hot very quickly as you are trying to start it.

Battery voltages seems to be getting pulled down, meter the battery when i went out to the car 11.6V a little low i would assume, then i started the car and it dropped to 9.6v and when i rev the car no increase to to around 13.6v as i would assume it should be, and i ran the car for a few minutes with the multimeter across the terminals and it seems to be slowly dropping down, would u think it would be worth replacing the battery or is it more likely the alternator or regulator rectifier?

sounds like alternator to me. stereo cutting out while driving, battery being drained, the symptoms point to power drain which most likely means alternator related.

If you are getting no voltage increase

when revving the engine then it is almost certainly the voltage regulator in the alternator is stuffed.

If battery hits below 11V, the ECU will not allow the car to start.

I'd try a known good battery first as thats the cheapest solution and the battery could be dying and not accepting charge.

Start with the simplest/cheapest fix 1st.

1: Swap battery: If no voltage change with RPM increase then:
2: Alternator re-co or pick up a 2nd hand alternator from wreckers.

Looks like it is the alternator or the rectifier changed the battery still no charging of the battery.

It's a very common problem on the Z32, and is usually the Voltage Regulator built into the Alternator. Can sometimes be caused by power steering fluid leaking into the Alternator, and frying the internals.
Mine was repaired by my local AutoLec about three years ago, and cost around $80(just needed a couple of diodes replaced).:zlove::zlove:

Sounds alternator related for sure. Exatly the same symtoms my 180 had when alternator died.

Was actually on my way home from the 300ZX/Tuned cruise too.

    Ahh good times.

    Definitely sounds alt/batt related.
Also check if your warning lights on the dashboard are going crazy. A lot of people report this phenomenon too when the alternator is on its last legs.

Thanks for the help everyone it was the alternator, needed it going today so i went to my local wreckers and right at the bottom of a big crate was a zx alternator, so i grabbed it for 65$ and put it in so after a few cuts and a bit of swearing the zx is back on the road, ready for the trip to Melbourne in the morning.

thanks again everyone the help was very much appreciated
