Well looks like my auto has decided to give up one me by the looks of it. I have just spent an hour limping the car home and i'm just so ready to give up this car. It has just gone from bad to worst and right when I' trying to buy a house without any warning this happens.

Good news is, now that the car is safely at home and I have a spare car to drive me to work for the next few weeks, all I need to do is get the problem fixed and I was wondering if anyone on here from the vic crew could suggest an experienced automatic transmission specialist that could diagnose and most likely rebuild my auto for me.

I'm currently living in Mill Park but any shop that people has had experience with 300zx's would be appreciated please.

Understand your frustration but a 27 year old auto failing is not the end of the world Adam. You could probably buy a good late model one off here. Maybe CARZ still has the one from his '96 that he's parting? What about Dean, maybe he's still got his '97 auto now that his is manual?

Might be worthwhile just to store her at a friend's place for a bit until you've gotten into a house before spending funds you'd prefer to save? Mine has been around the block, spent 3 years with a good friend from aus300 while I was overseas and then another 2 years at my parent's place while I was saving for a house.

Sadly in my 12 years of ownership 5 years of which it was off the road and not being driven but that's not such a bad thing if you want to keep it.

Bloody hell Adam what did you do, run over a leprechaun ?

Are you sure its toast, 8.356/10 it will be but what is it doing ?

Was there any lead in to the problem ?

No idea the car drove fine to work today and during my short drive to work not a single hiccup.

Then on the way home i noticed a slight metal humming sound coming from the engone bay. Kept driving and then at a stand still at a set of lights tried to accelerate amd the car coasted and just revved out. I pulled over in a safe place check the bay and when i focused near the auto the metal hum/rattle sound could be just heard over thr engine idling. Trying to take off no forward movement in drive or reverse.

Turn the car off and gave it a minute started the car put it in drive and i got some forward movement off ita own power but after a few seconds the car would just coast. It shifted up the gears a few times but it yeah it was very difficult to drive in this condition.

Unfortunately all of the transmission shops are shut until tomorrow and if i do find a shop that is willing to have a look its going to take at least 2 weeks if not more to get the transmission fix or replaced.

I spotted a used transmission locally to me on ebay which is priced at $750 which i could service and try and install myself but i would need help from more experiemced members and who knows if this transmission is in good working order.

Ive got a spare car for a few weeks so time isnt too much an issue its trying to find time to get the car to and from places and get it fixed properly i am stressing about.

Check fluid level and condition ?

I did check the fluid and it was definately in the high range and a red colohr but in saying that i only replaced half the fluid about 2 months ago and there is still 3 -4 litres of black thinned out atf fluid in the tranny. I did a double fluid change after 8 years of no maintenance and my transmission has been shifting much better since the change but there are days when the transmission wont shift and ive been driving it in the hold function setup to overcome the bad shifting.

I wouldn't be paying $750 for a used auto unless it's had a full service. These things are a dime a dozen with everyone doing manual conversions, they're practically unsaleable. I wouldn't be paying more than $100 for one and then take it in as you say and have it serviced/rebuilt.

I see, that was the only auto tranny i could find so far but hey its only been a few hours. Taking it to a shop and getting them do service and maybe rebuild is probably the best course of action to take i guess gotta find a reputable auto specialist who will work on zs now. Job for tomorrow.

I had the same transmission problem/symptoms with the gearbox in my Ford ute.
Not worth trying to fix it, just get a replacement.
You've been around long enough to know who the reliable parts sellers are.
I'd contact CARZ & see if he has something available.

Funy enough this is exactly what happened to my original transmission back in 07 i think. same symptons and yet I still chose to drive it home on the freeway when bang the torque converter broke off inside the box and then I got this tranny. I dont get why my transmissions die like twice in a row.

The problem with Carz is he is in QLD or NSW it would be murder just to ship the bloody thing down and then spend another few hundred just to get it installed. I know what your saying but he is was local to me in a heart beat but he is too far away for it to work.

I have found that the position of the TPS affects the Automatic transmission shifting.
What about Corroded contact, try adjusting it? Measure the volts across it.
The other is the fluid level, but you already checked that.

If you have killed your Auto (again) maybe investigate the Auto from the TT model.
    Stronger.

Is there a linkage somewhere or a metal pin that costs 20 cents to buy but $200 to install?

Blockage in the Auto because you replaced ATF after 8 years and that had dislodged some gunk and blocked something somewhere?

    IB ?????

How frequently do you change your transmission fluid?

Do you use the stock cooler (radiator)?

Ok well when i had my replacement transmission installed in the end of 07 i was told it had been serviced by joe ibesi. But i was unaware i needed to service my transmission and so left it unmaintaned for about 8 years when i finally decided to service it about 2 months ago myself.

This transmission has never been shifting right since day one only from 1st to 2nd gear. Joe did install an aftermarket trans cooler during the install but in 2012 i went back to the inbuilt stock setup trans cooler in my pwr alloy radiator which has been running fine for 5 years now.

Well nearly 10 years with practically no attention for a replacement gearbox isn't too bad... Agree with the others, go and grab a second hand one and wack it in. Freight from QLD or NSW isn't too bad, get it sent with e-go or similar. I sent a engine to Perth and it didn't cost that much.

Hi Adam, just checked with e-go, on a pallet an auto transmission to 3082 would be close to $200 but in a box it'd be more like $120 to your door. I've sold auto transmissions in the past that I didn't know the condition of for $250 (usually Nissan Patrol owners buy them to rebuild), $750 for one in unknown condition is a big ask...
If you don't have any luck locally, I could get the auto transmission off this '96 NA pretty quick for you (drove beautifully with perfect changes) and send it together with the mufflers if you still want them :)

Before you go to the expense of a replacement auto it would be advisable to do a Conzult diagnosis on your current one. As per attachment there are two solenoids that control shifting , one may not be operating, correctly.

Also is the auto ECU functioning correctly .?

If the transmission oil filter was not changed and pan not dropped to fully replace oil this can also be an isuue. Only about 50% comes out through the drain plug.

Pretty sure only the TT box has a drain plug

You did your own service, so that means the service kit and filter after dropping the pan. The ATF that was in the pan has been replaced but whatever was in the pipes is the old stuff, right?

What voltage does your TPS show?

Mine was out and serviced about 7 years ago.
They put this Nulon stuff in.

This is container of leftovers for top up.

After a recent service I ended up with something else in there and now I would have a mixture. Auto shifts are not as good as they were. I have made it better by adjusting the TPS voltage.

    Also this ......
