Tranny Oil Leak :(

I recently had my Redline Lightweight Shockproof oil leaking out of my breather pipe (which was pointed downwards for some reason) Anyway, the pipe was rotated upwards, and extended into the engine bay near the battery using a length of EFI hose...

Today, I noticed that the car was smoking underneath again :( After much panic and some investigation, it was discovered that the oil was somehow leaking out of this EFI hose :O I was at a Tech Day at the time so I asked around, and everyone's stumped as to how this could happen...

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Cheers

Usually efi hose is not suitable for oil and will go bad after a while with oil in it.

u need hose that is good for oil, like plastic or silicone based pipe.
ive got Lightweight Shockproof oil and i also extended the breather line up to a higher spot, ive got a clear plastic pipe on mine and it has been fine for a long time now.

Yeah you want to use an oil proof hose.. I still don't see why it was overflowing out of the breather though Shamas.

Transmission oil cooler hose will do the job.

i think you box is getting really hot and spitting oil. maybe wrap your zorst to stop a bit if heat transfer.

Fair call, but it was only put in about a month or so ago... Surely it couldn't have gone bad so quickly? Also, the oil is coming out the end of the hose :S

Apparently it's a common problem with this oil... Something to do with frothing... I think...

    Sounds good, thanks :) Supercheap?

Now that's an idea :) What should I use for heat shielding?

apparently with the shockproof oil it is fairly common for it to come out the breather from what i hear. it foams up more than normal oils or somthing like that..
extending the breather and putting it up higher sorts it.

Mabey is coming out from where the hose is connected/joined to the original too? But it wont take long for the oil to eat into the rubber hose and make it swell and split.
I think mine still comes out the end a tiny bit but not alot and not enough to be notacable or cause problems

although i dont drive it much.. its mainly a weekend car for me, so may be more if i drove it everyday..
but ive had it the way it is for like a year or 2 and its been fine.

Hrmmm, looks like I'll be grabbing some new hose, and something to heat shield my exhaust... Hopefully that'll fix it :) I'll just check the hose periodically for oil...

Would I be able to purchase these two items from Supercheap?

I have also thought about trying to modify the extended line a little bit to stop it dribbling out the end but never got around to doing it & its never been bad enough to worry about doing it.

My idea was to put a small thicker section in line on the breather hose so it goes from the thin breather hose to a thicker section (inch or 2 long) then back thin again (thin-thick-thin) so that when the oil makes it up that high it will let the oil get to the thick part and sit there and allow it to drain back down when not in use. the idea of the thick part to let air bubbles get past but allow the oil to stay there instead of being pushed right to the top of the pipe.
or possibly just a thicker pipe at the top.

Just a random idea i thought. not sure if it would work or not.

and yeh should be able to the hose from supercheap repco or coventries or somthing similar..

Not a bad idea, might work... Worth a shot :)

I'll try the heat wrap and the new hose... If they fail, changing to a more 'normal' tranny oil should fix the issue correct? What's the best 'normal' tranny oil in your opinion? Just in case...

i got a roll of heat wrap if you want to give that ago. I also got fuks tranny fluid to if you want to give that a try

I had similar problems for ages with Redline Lightweight Shockproof... finally bit the bullet and went all out with a solution. Breather tube running into a small catch can with breather filter, mounted on top of the engine.

Didn't cost me all that much to get done, and it's completely sorted once and for all now.

lol, I wish i'd seen this sooner, I just bought a roll of the stuff... Doesn't really look all that impressive lol, not sure how I'm gonna secure it at the ends either... Also bought some tranny hose as per Carter's suggestion :)

Now THAT's an solution :D Can you post pics please?

you can buy metal cable ties to secure the ends with if you go this way

Definitely DONT use plastic cable ties, i've seen this before and it's retarded I had to take the guys extractors off to pick away all the melted plastic.
Exhaust wrapping is illegal in WA as far as I know, regardless of it's use law enforcement and licensing technicians will believe it's there to patch up a hole. My 186 is wrapped from the extractors back to the rear muffler with the stuff, there was a noticeable difference in power too!

Thanks Ross! :D Good 'ol cable ties... lol

    LOL

Serious? Grrrrrrrr... Any other way to lower my tranny temps?

    More or Less Power?

On a side note I haven't had any more smoke and stuff... yet... So if I'm lucky all this may be null and void... Though ST74's solution is promising :)
