THE SLOT CAR VQ30 ENGINE TIME

    Finally we are going to put a VQ30 motor into The SLot Car.
    Bought a stock VQ30DET and going to put it in with stronger valve springs, modified and larger capacity sump, larger custom plenum and throttle bodies, and making a twin turbo kit. We have sample stronger valve springs to check out. We plan on 380rwkw which it should handle for a fare while, whilst we build astrong one with larger capacity.

    We will use the exercise to see how viable it is to convert road going zeds to have similar.

    Today we mounted the motor in a z32 front cut, which we have mounted on an electric fork lift, and was fairly easy to mod cross member to suit. Then chopped up the sump, and started to remake it. Have a bell housing adapter from engineering firm being made.

    Should have more progress pics next day or so.

    Why VQ30DET and not VQ30DETT? $$$?

    wouldnt it be less fabricating work for turbos,piping ,plennum?

    Still have not totally confirmed twin turbo set up and tossing both options around atm. More response with twins I think, and with no VVT and less stroke with VQ30 having 93 mm bore, and mainly circuit racing we are leaning towards twins. Plus you can buy cast iron manifolds for twin GT28's. Similar amount of work overall.

    Why not something bigger?
    Motor wont be working as hard, twin turbo it, bags of power.
    Only time and money.;)

    There is a guy on SAU putting a VQ30DET into a R34 with a couple of turbo's custom plenum etc (in the members projects section if anyone is interested). I noticed that UAS supplied him with some sort of conversion to make the block a closed deck design.

    Will be good to see a VQ into a Zed in Aus :D

    whats happened to the VG in the slot car ?
    has it gone pop or is it still in good condition?

    If you speak to tom at PZP he can get you an adapter plate.
    Im currently putting a vq30det into my zed. there is quiet a bit of work involved. need to make new engine mount brackets, fully cut up you x member move your power steer rack back. its a good idea to turn around your gearbox support, moves the motor froward about 30mm. and if you need engine mount brackets i can supply them for you from aly or steel.

    Yep soken to PZP, also MRC who put a VQ into a S13, which does not need sump mods. The S13 owner bought one of these adapter plates from Perth, not sure if same place but most probably. Not so good though as had no locating dowells, and other issues. They did not even use it.

    We did not make engine mount brackets, as we have custom engine mounts, and did not need to move rack, as remaking bottom of sump with baffles and much larger too.

    Looks like it could be a good viable option over a worn out VG, as the motor is much cheaper, much easier to get, much lighter, later model, less worn. The extras needed such as bell housing adapter, unless using 6 speed 350z gbox, then sump and plenum mods might not be much more than VG motor. Especially if it gets popular and do a run of them. This is not including turbo's kit, which will be same as VG's, assuming upgrading turbo's to GT28's anyway, then the only extra cost is the the cast manifolds, again upgrade over the VG, and with optional external gate flange. A few other things like radiator hoses, and we will know better when it is all done.

    The height of the plenum maybe a future issue if you are considering doing a public run of VQ conversions.

    Yep, sticks out of the bonnet on a few I've seen done.

    350Z 6 speed would be nice though :D

    I Thought the 350z gearboxes werent as strong as the vgs???

    Don't know but 6 speeds in R34 are strong and same in Supra, but they are Getrag which are strong, but S15 are weak 350Z ?

    Re bonnet height, yes we will sort this via lower custom engine mounts and sump hopefully. I have dropped my motor about 13mm with no issues, and road car should be same and need to check it out further, with VQ and height of gear box and alignment of tail shaft etc. Otherwise or including a custom plenum.

    The S15 and Z33 6 speeds are quite a small gearbox compared to the Getrag's found in Supra's and R34's. The Z33 gearbox's are specially prone to synchro damage on the early models, with the later models getting a double synchro on 1st through to 4th.

    pfff. It fits...just need some minor alteration of the tunnel. Nothing an angle grinder, sledge hammer, some sheet metal, some square tubing, a welder and a creative mind couldn't fix. :biggrin: :rolleyes:
