The speedo in my 1990 Aus-spec 300ZX had developed the classic intermittent fault and I was going to resolder the circuit board as per the Tech Section article. Once I had the cluster out and had a look at the board, I decided to get it done by an instrument technician.

For a total cost of $88, I have just had the speedo circuitboard resoldered, tested and recalibrated at an instrument specialist in Brisbane and it seems to have solved the problem. Most speedo clusters I have seen for sale are considerably more than that and you still take a chance the speedo is working properly.

In case it is of interest to others with speedo or other instrument problems, I took it to:

    Lionel Otto Instruments
    124 Evans Road
    Salisbury
    Brisbane Qld 4107
    phone: (07) 3277 3888
    fax: (07) 3277 8520
    email: info@ottoinstruments.com.au
    web: www.ottoinstruments.com.au
    proprietor: John Robertson.

Also of interest is that this firm can also supply new aftermarket speedo circuit boards they get made specially made, but the cost is a more daunting $319 includng GST.

    cheers

With the recalibration, is this done when it's back in-car, so you can adjust for larger rims (with a larger rolling diameter) that would throw out the accuracy of your stock speedo?

No, it was calibrated on the bench presumably aginst the spec for OEM wheels.
You could drop them an email to see how you go about getting speedo recalibrated in the car for non-standard diameter tyres.

    cheers
