    Budget:
I would like to see this project completed for less than $10,000 including the purchase of the car.

Hi guys, been holding off posting up a build thread due to lack of content to post to begin with. I've been wanting to build up a Z32 for a while now, however both of my previous Z32s seemed to be unsuitable bases, my first being plagued with electrical issues and my second being a little bit mistreated. This time i seem to have found a winner. On the surface it may seem a little tainted to some, however it's mechanically A1 and is a mint runner, seems to be fairly well treated aside from the paint which is no big deal since i wish to respray it anyways.

Anyways its a 1990 Aus spec n/a Auto. The cluster says 93xxx - condition of the wheel, pedal rubbers and carpet seem to squark the same song but you never know. Some pre-purchase pictures can be found below. It came without rego and no roadworthy, not really sure why as it was pretty tidy already.

Day 1 of work: First few things we did was extend the reach of both negative and positive terminals for the battery as they were a bit short, stuck engine flush through the motor, dropped the oil and filled it up with royal purple and a new filter. We checked the condition of the timing belt and double checked the base timing settings with a timing light (all was good) did a full cooling system flush and added new fluids, dumped all brake fluid and replaced with high temp dot4, added new powersteering fluid and new ngk platinum iridium plugs. new diff oil and new trans fluid and filter kit put in. We then pulled out the head unit and found this...

Yep! Ye olde tape and twist... greaaaaaat. Anyways got it all fixxed up, soldered & heatshrinked like it should be. New system in - Option audio 1000W 5ch amp with a polk audio 12in sub, rockford fosgate 6.5in splits in the front doors and rockford fosgate 5x7s in the rear, 10ga speaker wiring all the way through, 0ga power and ground. Committed to having the speakers in there till they blow or i sell/crash the car, so its all sealed in properly.

Before we wrapped it up for the night we made a start on the front bar, the one that came on the car had no lower lip, probably smashed it on a driveway or curb or something as it looked hacksawed off. Luckily i had another, but the lower lip was painted a bright blue for some stupid reason. So we sanded it back, prepped it and got the first few coats of black onto it, ready to clear it in the morning.

Day 2: Front bar cleared and fitted to the car, missing splash guard fitted, stereo install completed and all trims placed back together, interior detailed and exterior washed, polished and waxxed (although paint is shit i wanted to make it look tidy for rwc that afternoon)

So off to roadworthy, up on the hoist and i was invited to have a good look at it underneath. Have to say it was probably the tidiest car ive been under in a VERY long time, not a drop of oil anywhere. All in all came out with a pass, the 2 gel filled bushings in the front will need doing soon and my front brake pads are low (considering i'm fitting turbo brakes this didn't worry me).

Day 3: So a proper road test... a friend of mine needed to go into brisbane today to pick up his new car, an MX83 Toyota Cressida. Perfect opportunity to give the Zed a proper run. First Problem!! I was doing about 95km/h when i looked down and saw this... oh well! not a big deal

So we get there with the only other problem being the anti-lock warning light coming on for some unknown reason between the sunshine coast and caboolture, didn't come on again after we started the car again (has done this a couple of times since, not really sure of the cause just yet). So anyways all was good until we got about 5 minutes up the road and we're stuck in road works on a 1 way road, bumper to bumper and the cressida runs out of fuel, so off into a side street it is!

We spent around 30 minutes trying to find a servo because ALL of our phones were flat and the lighter in both the cressy and the zed were both broken so we had no gps.... fun times! We finally found a servo, got a jerry can, filled it and got the cressy back for some fuel.

Time for a mountain run! The Zed handled itself just fine and came out the other end of nebo and samford just as confident as it went in. Was really impressed with how well it went for what i was expecting to be a problem car. Made it home safe and sound, and quite comfortable i might add!

Day 5: (well aware i skipped a day). Took a friend out to noosa and back and about half way there it was raining hard, seems my targa on the drivers side leaks right at the front corner where it meets with the window glass, would explain the rank wet smell that i removed with the steam cleaner when i got the car. Guess im up for new targa seals, really don't want it to leak... Anyways i got home and it had stopped raining, test fitted some wheels. Weds Kranze 18x11 +12 and 18x10 +12 - pictures speak for themselves, not sure what i think of them, opinions good and bad appreciated. Keep in mind the car is being resprayed midnight purple.

Liam, I haven't read every word but I did notice that you stated using powersteering fluid.
These cars use the same hydraulic fluid as the brake system in the powersteering from what this forum and FSM say. Maybe change that?

Not brake fluid in the power steering, it uses ATF. Bit of a difference between the two.

those wheels have more aggressive offsets than mine .

How are you going to fit them :p

    Define 'fit' ;)

That's what i thought.... glad i used the right stuff. I've never heard of brake fluid being used in the power steering system before.

    click this

    Why not?!

Well "fit" is a pretty loose term these days. Would probably require some pretty serious guard work, theres no good paint to stop me from going hardcore with a guard roller and pumping them out to fit them, but im contemplating just using VOLK GT-Cs 8.5" & 9.5" with +22 offset, a friend wants to trade for the kranze. Not sure what i wanna do just yet. Running a little bit of camber is sort of the obvious thing that would need to be done, that being said it would ruin any level of wet weather grip and for track use would likely be unsuitable as the rear end tends to break loose under hard braking. That being said there's nothing stopping me running 2 different sets of wheels with my own alignment settings.

Man.... Gotta say I really like those wheels. Absolutely zero practicality but they look Quite good. Refreshing from all the jap "race" spec wheels

    Keep up the good work.

Alot of my close friends have been giving me shit lately for wanting to potentially use these saying how ricey it is just because they're chrome. Funny thing being genuine WEDS its more "JDM" than their rota's and fake bbs/drifteks etc. There are a few other wheel choices i've been toying with:

    - R33 GT-R Wheels
    - BBS LM (bit overdone though)
    - XD9 Emotion
    - Work Rezax Type II
    - Blitz Type III

  11. Anti

    Anti 14.7 x 14.7 = 44.1

    Keep the wheels

    Make them fit

Seems like we'd have fairly similar cars by the time i finish mine. doesn't mean we can't be friends? Roll together in style in my opinion.

you'll seriously regret a veilside evolution exhaust on an NA, especially an Auto. The drone is unbearable :(

won't be auto for much longer though.... maybe a few weeks?

but will still be an NA? veilside lasted about 2 days on my NA, couldn't even drive it for longer than 10min. Stoked with the same fitted to my TT however

was it really THAT bad? cuz i mean i do 1500-2000km journeys once a month....

anything above idle was unbearable. This is with a full evolution system however. Think member Lidz was running 1 on his NA for years, unsure as to whether or not it was just a catback. They aren't appearing for sale in Japan as frequently as they were a few years ago, and fetching much higher prices. Would hate to find you went to all the expense of buying and importing, only to find yourself in the same boat

Was only going to use the catback bit of the system with the extractors robs selling anyways. still gonna cost around $800-$900 once i have a system in my hands though.

RyZan has said it better than I did. ATF is what I meant to tell you there and Auto transmission.
It was 6:15am, I just woke up.

I found out that powersteering fluid is incompatible with many 90's Jap cars after a petrol station mechanic used powersteering fluid in my car. It started leaking after that and then I was charged for a reconditioned ps pump before the error was realised. They still maintained that the labour charges were valid and diagnosing the problem was still chargeable. The ps pump would have needed replacing soon anyway because it was 2O years old. I didn't get a refund.
