Finally available special order to stat with lighter alloy and steel crank pulley WITH harmonic balancer.

5 or more $595 each 10 or more $450 each
50% up front and will take approximately 6 weeks to be made.

Centre and vibration dampener are made of K1045 steel with alloy pulley. Annodised blue or can do other colours on demand will be ANDRA approved for 10 second bracket cars and absorb resonance and lighter than factory by about 40%.

There has been much discussion over the years with the one piece alloy under drive pulley which have advantages but do have disadvantages being added vibration in bottom end usually not noticeable but can be and although usually not a problem not good for long term in relation to engine bearings. I removed and currently have a stock one on my race car for that reason. Now can have stronger race of road use for big hp zeds especially those doing less than 11 seconds at the drags.

Ross 'Balancers have been around for many years and make harmonic balancers for many road cars as well as high end drag cars. They have also made light weight and stronger than factory two piece harmonic balancers for GTR's for a few years now with no problems. The interesting point for those thinking the alloy one piece every engine failed as they are a longer crank and more prone to resonance than shorter VG30 crank which gets away with but still big ? Mainly with big hp engines?

    Is it an underdrive pulley?

    I think

not sure but im assuming its similar to the one from uas

    under engine parts

From what I gather it's a lightweight version of the factory harmonic balancer, rather than an underdrive pulley. There used to be a good U/pulley article in the tech section but the link doesn't work so here's my attempt...

From my limited understanding an underdrive pulley is good because it reduces rotating mass, hence freeing up some power that the engine would otherwise expend turning the pulley. It's called an underdrive pulley because it slows down the rotation of other belt driven apparatus that run off the underdrive pulley (power steering. aircon, and alternator), hence the name underdrive pully. Got it so far?

Some people argue that an underdrive pulley is bad because it does not absorb harmonic vibrations (which your factory harmonic balancer does). Some people don't notice the additional vibrations but some do, and as john points out the additional vibration (being caused by no longer having a harmonic vibration) is not so good for long term engine life, paricularly in big HP applications. John has stock harmonic balancer pulley on the slot car for this reason.

Anyway hope that explanation helps a little. The advantage with this unit is it is lighter than factory (meaning less rotating mass which is why you install an underdrive pulley) but still absorbs engine vibration.

DISCLAIMER: This post is only my interpretation and shoudn't be taken as gospel :D , hopefully john will respond and clarify

I'd buy it (for $450) if it was a harmonically (is that a word?) balanced underdrive pulley. Otherwise I may as well stick with the standard one.

    Underdriven yes

Under driven although options as too how much. I would think the power steering should be underdriven the most. Under driven being smaller so turns the power steering less for example so less heat and power loss.

what would be awesome would to underdrive the alternator and power steering but to run the aircon at full speed.. (as its clutch is disengadged when off.. and its pointless saving power when its on.. and my air con isnt as cold when stuck in traffic anymore with the UD pulley)

if you could arrange this john.. ill buy one

    dumber than dumber question

so... a 'harmonic balancer' and an 'underdrive pulley' are the same thing? and that some 'underdrive pulleys' absorb vibrations better than other UDs out there, which gives it the term 'harmonic balancer'?

sorry if this is plain obvious.

I'd pay $450 for one, is postage included in that price John?

    what belts does it require

do you/can you supply the correctly sized belts for this,or does it use the standard size belts......
may be interested undecided as yet....:D

    Belts

Yes can do that is easy and depends on volume can do a great price on these also.

What options to underdrive % do we have?

The ross website was still undergoing updates.

The ati race damper has 13% underdrive, but retails at 410$USD so I am just wondering how this will compare.

    I like it

I could be in , but like most ppl, the $450 price range sounds all the more sweeter, i like what minivan said about leaving the A/C alone.... also wouldn't it be better for us as a whole if john could do the pulley as a set with the required belts, if they can be included for a good price like was said (and everyone who buys one will need them anyways).

i suppose you might be able to just run a smaller pulley

on the aircon unit, which would then give you the desired results. no idea what'd be involved in such a conversion though.

    Vulcanised rubber

DooGz the alloy aftermarket 840gram one peice alloy underdrive pulleys do NOT absorb resonance form the crank. How could they? The factory one and these ones are two or three peice and have vulcanised rubber joining them which does absorbe resonance from the crank. Many who fit the one peice light weight alloy one on their engine notice added vibration and being a short crank gets away with it but will shorten lift of bearings and with big hp zeds they are not good and on long cranks like GT's they flog the bearings out very quickly.
Another option I heard that ATI now do them for VG30DETT and have contacted them to confrim and for a bulk price and options and ETA also. See here and for more info on resonance dampening technology and better than factory harmoic balancers.
