90TTZ has just finished his and I'm now starting mine.

Congrats 90TTZ, was awesome to watch the video of first start, like a baby being born. Its a boy you can tell by the donk.

Is this a stock (near new) radiator, anyone recognise it ?

Yep that's a stock radiator for an Auto. Why did you start dismantling the engine before you took it out of the shell?

What's your plans for this build anyway, freshen up or modded up :zlove:

    And dont forget

to remove all the tape rags ect, later on. A rag sucked into the compressor @3000rpm sounds bad, really bad.

you realize you generally need the plenum on 2 pull the engine unless your using engine slingers!

Not Really, Can use the w/g solenoid mounting bracket points or even the back of the head, more than one way to skin a wabbit!;)

    Thanks ....

    For the advice.

But I have a nifty lift plate (lent from a secret source) thats going to bolt in to the lower plenum, less lift height and safer then lifting from upper plenum IMHO.

Not to worried about stuff going in engine as its a full strip down, but was interested that bits of gasket fell in just from lifting plenum if I was doing plenum only I would tape a small tube to a vacum cleaner and suck em out.

Probably should put some rags in the intercoolers so a mouse dosent crawl in there, as I'm not sure if I will be upgrading those at this stage.

Build spec hmmmm well I want very reliable daily driver with a bit of kick, quaters in the high 12's and 0-100 in 4.5 seconds are marks I have considered to help work out what I'm going to do, 300rwkw to 375rwkw (400HP - 500HP). I'm thinking that the upper end of that power range will start reducing reliabaility, the problem is that 300rwkw is a pretty much as much as you can get out of a well tuned standard configuration, then you go turbos, dumps, intercoolers, injectors and deffinately forged rods about $5000 in parts more then a standard rebuild. Theres a bit of a bump in the curve from standard, yeah maybe I could assist the standard rebuild with lightened pulleys, 411 gears, slight increase in boost blah blah blah blah OMG I'm hearing voices

    Yet to be decided.

If you just intend to max out the stock setup, then id be aiming for 270 to 285rwkw absolute MAX. The stock turbo's jsut will not make power over about 385 to 390 rwhp. the few in the few people in the states who have reached 390 or even cracked the magical 400whp must have done their runs in the middle of winter at minus 10.

In Aus , i think the best we have to go on is ZX2NV with 267rwkw no nitrous and standard fuel. Has anyone got better?

I am doing doing the same thing as you, rebuilt all stock, hogged out the stock exhaust manifolds, polished the ports and lower plenum, and port matched everything. Going stock turbo's with split dumps , 2.5 test pipes and twin 3in catbak. For fuel im using stock injectors but upping the pressure. Ive gone for a front mount intercooler with air guides and a big HKS mushroom filter.

Hoping to run 17 - 18psi. and figuring im goig to be ont eh high side of 350whp. My goal is to get as close to 400whp as possible with stock turbo's

Quarter mile times - if you are a great driver witha well set up car then you can hope for 12's - Me im looking for a low 13 on street tyres.

Good luck with your build, good to see someone else on the same track as me :D

Yeah, I think he was JamesZ, had an imaculate black Zed for sale for a long time in Brisbane, Motsons got 275 rwkw out of it, standard engine, turbo's, injectors, no re-build, stock engine:cool: and it was a cool car, don't know where it ended up

yeah thats what you call stuffed transmission oil, it puts that varnished coating over everything. it might be ok with a oil change  :( ..................

    Engine is out ....

Wasnt as hard a s I thought, got a little excited yesterday when we realised that coudnt turn the motor over because it was seized, to get to torque converter bolts, but tranny slipped out very easily leaving torque converter attatched to the engine.

I assume the turbo wheel should spin freely ? Well my passenger side is rock solid, it has been sitting for 2 year, why is it so ?

    Why is it so?

Could be because it had little or no oil. The oil feed lines partly block up over the years.

    How long did the removal

    take?

Over a couple of weeks ....

Probably about 12 hours deffinately less then 15 hours actual on the job time with no air tools. A little more time reading and stuffing around.

Not too bad for a mechanical novice doing first engine pull

A fair bit of time screwing aroung organising stuff like hoist and stands etc

Had a hand from a 3rd year apprentise mechanic for auto and actual engine pull.

No real dramas in the end.
