mate the other day i was going to start a

i miss dub thread, where is he lol

and here you are, and i had a feeling you were going to come back with a bang...this isnt far off it :D the grounds for a future v8 conversion...nice mate

600rwhp with an ls engine...usually VERY undrivable on the road lol just like the new corvette :D good to see your back mate

Nice to pop in again, cheers mate.
Been busy elsewhere and with other things. It seemed too many owner operators (they used to be called wankers) like to screw up a perfectly good forum with their crap about things I really don't see have anything to do with the 300ZX, so instead of adding to the shit-fight I made my Zed tinkering more an offline thing :)

    Nice sig BTW ;)

Brad, got any recent pics of the conversion??

and what mods have been done to achieve the 600rwhp??.... or are they secret???..:) Either way, sounds bloody awesome..:)

    Cheers

    No pics just yet sorry.
    6 litre + turbo = a very easy 600 RWHP mate.

still a100% power increase. I think there would be quite a few mods involved, good planning and good execution too.

Gotta say great initiative with this one BUT

Dont put in the black beast. I am sorry but an outdated pushrod dinosaur shouldnt be in a Z period let alone in PHATT. Buy another cheap one and put it in that. It would be a shame to wreck PHATT

That is my opinion and credit is due on some level but its like putting a Ford engine in a Honda they dont really mix

    and the vh45 isnt outdated  :p :D :p

Who cares how it makes the power so long as it does?

    vh45 = not pushrods
    vh45 = released a few months after the z32

    so not really :p

lol its more outdated then the ls1

jas was saying the ls1 is outdated when he is putting in a vh45 which is a much older engine

not that there is anything wrong with both engines, i just thought it was funny that he was saying the ls1 is outdated lol

  12. Benny_C

    Benny_C About as subtle as...

    actually the ls1

is "old technology" even though only on the GM scene in the last 8(?) years, the engine design is very old and low-tech so to speak. VH45 is a more advanced engine even though older.

OK, here's something to think about...

How many tuners are there that are familiar with the LS1/LS2/LSX in your own state?

How many aftermarket parts are readily available, and how big is the range?

The LS series motor is able to pass California's strict emissions laws.

If you are building a show car then the internally cammed motor has a smaller overall head size and therefore a neater look in the engine bay. Look at the size of the Ford overhead V8 and how huge that motor is in the bay.

And while we are on the overhead versus pushrod debate, the Ford twin overhead cam V8 has never had a chance of producing anywhere near the power and torque of the LS series of motors. It's had years of development too.

who cares if it's pushrod, it's light, compact and makes good power.

if i were to do a engine transplant, i'd be doing a LS engine built to rev over 7k.

Actually I've been told lifting the old TT motor out of the Zed and putting the LS1 into the Zed the engine crane strained a LOT more with the old TT motor. I guess the LS1 must have been lighter huh? :)

Not sure if I'd want high revs Mike, that's what you have to do with a smaller capacity V6 to make power, with the V8 it's ALL about the low down grunt. So primal but so right :)

you wouldnt be getting much lagg too...well depending on your turbo(s):p

no surprise there, just trying to throw a few points in there for the purists who disregard all of the LS1's advantages due to the fact it's pushrod and supposedly 'old hat'

i guess it's all down to personal preference brad. i like my revs even if it's a V8 :) am drooling over LS7s which rev to 7k stock out of the box.

    Yep spot on Benny

    Fair comment

Yep thats true as well personal preference is key and its great if Brad is doing it and credit is due. I just think its old hat been done to death and not really that special any more especially for a show car. It will be another LS1 powered car among many many others. Thats what I like about even the VG30 to a point. There are so few built high HP motors out there doing the rounds that when people at shows come across one its like wow thats cool.

Anyway thats just my view and I dont want this thread turning into a flame war. Good on ya Brad for giving it a go. PS a VK56 would be so sweet and a true show stopper.

I just noticed this thread and the pictures are gone.
It would be good to see them and compare notes.

We used the USA sump on ours which is the opposite to the Australian version. It had to be modified to miss the steering rack, and in hindsight, it would have been easier modifying the steering rack or changing it to something else.

We cut the firewall and massaged the tunnel and now we can drop the box without removing the engine. We had to use solid engine mounts, as Caz said earlier, as it ripped a brand new one first outing and stretched the other one. And that was with a stock 5.7 litre.

We were going to use the 8 throttle body setup, but gave up waiting for the carbon fibre plenums, which have now been made. This setup is now going on a hotrod. The rear trumpet and plenum on the drivers side sits further back than the passenger side and required a section of the wiper cavity to be cut out (in the firewall) to allow room. The brake booster had to go as well and we fitted a pedal box. Now we have gone turbo, it could have stayed.

The Textralia Z Grip is a great clutch and with all the abuse we give it in Drifting, it has been faultless and holds plenty of power, yet feels soft like a standard clutch and you can slip it, rather than being on or off.

We have fitted a single turbo to ours now, and the engine temperatures are fine, but radiant heat is a problem. Even after having the extreme black coating on the manifolds, y pipe to turbo and dump pipe, we are still having problems with heat and have had to use a lot of heat shielding.

The manifolds used to glow red hot, and we initially wrapped them in heat tape. They melted spark plug leads through the heat tape, and through the fire sleeve on the leads. We have now re-routed them.

The oil filler cap was probably 75mm from the manifold (after ceramic coating) and it blistered and melted a hole in the filler. Now replaced and heat shielded.

This weekend the DriftZ is racing at Oran Park, for the first time with the turbo fitted, so hopefully we are competitive.

Twin turbos would have been easier on ours - being a race car as we chopped the front section out, removed the headlights and moved the radiator forward. However, the cost of 2 turbos is expensive, especially compared to the cost of the single turbo we got.

1st and 2nd gear are now redundant. We take off in 3rd and can even take off in 4th gear.

The LS1 engine is approx 70kg lighter than the VG30DETT.

The last time we weighed the DriftZ we had it down to 1170kg.

This photo is before we had everything ceramic coated.
