    Hi Zedders!

The last couple of says I've noticed some oil drops on the garage floor and a burning smell when I get out of the car after a drive.

It seems that my differential front seal (where it meets the drive shaft) is leaking and has splashed oil over the exhaust pipe (hence the burning smell).

How much work is involved to replace the seal?

    Just had this done>>

    It requires some special tools.
Removing the exhaust system to gain access, Tailshaft removal & then the job can be done in place. Do you have a N/A or a TT. this is important, as the front oilseal is different in both. The TT has a crush ring, whereas the N/A does not. Have a look in the Search Section & you should be able to find an article, if not, look up what you want in the Owners Manual, of which I know that there's a removal/replacement article. The job should take no more than a few hours & you will need to put your car on a hoist to do this.

    RE: Just had this done

It's a TT, with a single piece tailshaft.

The "PD" Section of the manual has the details. It'd kill me to do this in my garage. Looks like I'll have to visit a mechanic this week and get her up on a hoist.

I've noticed some tail shaft "slap" these past few weeks. Throttle on and off quickly results in a metal slap at the diff. Could this be a contributing factor to the seal wearing out or a result of it wearing?

    This could be >>

from a number of things. The most likely would be if you replaced the centre bearing at some stage, prior to fitting a one piece tailshaft. The crush ring that I mentioned fits behind the Diff flange & holds the seal in place. If the Diff flange has been removed before, perhaps the mechanic didn't pre-load the diff, which has to be done when the flange has been removed. Could also be a factor that the mechanic has over-tightened the Crush Ring, thus pulling the shaft forward & then creating a gap between the Pinion & Crown Gears. It wouldn't take much, a thou or two would do it. If thats whats happened the gears then wouldn't mesh cleanly, allowing for some slap, as you put it.
Hope this helps you a little.

    I know...I know

Seems strange that it's leaking only 2 years after being installed.

The tail shaft has the letters "B R O D I E" written on it. I think it might be the source of my problems!!

PS: Did your Neutral switch get hooked up after the

conversion? If you are going back there, might be worth getting him to redo?

Mine didn't. Have been reading up on the neutral switch and it has impact on injectors, idle and other engine parameters... I recall Jedi's recent detonation issue was also partly due to no neutral switch...

    Yes it's hooked up.

I also read Jedi's post on the importance of this switch.

When I had my car off of the road for the plenum pull I made up my own gear box loom which hooked up my reverse and neutral switches.

I'm going to take a journey down to Gavin Woods' on Thursday when I have the day off. I don't fancy my chances in getting the mechanic who fitted the tail shaft to redo the work. I think I'm better off sorting it out at Gavin's.

I am amazed at how clearly you remember my explanation of this issue.

    :LOL::LOL::LOL::LOL: Well done, KEZA:thumbsup::thumbsup:

    Well >>

it doesn't matter where the info came from, as long as it helps a fellow Zedder. Besides Chili, I didn't see you volunteering the info.:p

Every time I volunteer any tech info, someone demands a photocopy

of my relevent Diploma (kind of like your offer of assistance with shirts:p:p:rolleyes:), so maybe I should just allow people to find out the expensive way (the way I had to. ).

No photocopied diploma required for me Chili

A faxed copy will do just fine!

I'm just thankful for KEZA's reply. It explains a lot about what has been going on with my rear end

It sounds like you had a similar problem with your Zed. Is there anything else I should know before I book her in to the mechanics?

Update: No more leaky rear end!

Thanks to Lindsay and the team at Proline in Yatala.!

My diff pinion seal was replaced and I'm back on the road. Awesome service guys. I'll be coming back!
