After drawing a total blank and/or "Database Error" messages when using the Search function, I am in an urgent need of advice on what is required if I want to do away with the two under plenum flanged pipes.
I have just replaced/installed a new set of Fuel Injectors and was advised to delete the two steel pipes running from the front underside of the upper plenum.
Anyone able to throw some ideas on what is required?

i bought an egr delete kit from coz when I did a big order, but I later read that there is a welsh plug that is the same size that just bangs in, if you remove the egr its self then you will need to seal the lh exhaust manifold where the pipes goes in. I couldn't get mine out, in the end I had to pull the motor

hi chili, if youd like to delete the egr, or block of the 2 entrys in to plenum, you can get diamond shaped "blanking plates" thatbolt in place over the holes.

as per you other thread, the 4 little bolts holding them on can be a pain, but a open ended spanned and 6 bucketloads of patience will see the job done.

    hope this helps.

You don't want to delete them unless the engine is out and you're doing a complete EGR delete...

Ive read that people have successfully removed the egr valve and parts with the engine in situ. Albeit a pita job i personally only removed mine when the engine was out. stuff fiddling down there, leaning over the bay for that long.

You could leave the valve attached. Remove the plenum pipes and manifold pipes from the valve. Remove/block the vacuum line and go from there. Technically a delete without actually removing the valve.

Why are you removing it Lloyd? Apart from someone saying to? Do you think its not functioning anymore?

Yeah, ive replaced the heater hoses back there, plenum on, a few times. Made me spend money on a new tool - win. Still an pita job though.

For info: There is another way of doing this as well

You can tap self tapping threaded bolts into either the plenum or the EGR pipes and then block off the EGR manifold bolt with a threaded bolt.

I have only heard of some doing the plenum with this method and with success, but I myself have self tapped the steel pipes previously instead and found it worked quite well as the thread went right down into the steel pipes and was a secure fit and leak proof.

Just leaves you more options to consider.

When I ran the poll on deletes, the majority of respondents (75%) were in favour of doing the EGR delete. The only delete that came close to arguable in context was the HICAS at around 50% / 50% for and against. So it seems that many are in favour of doing this to remove Carbon flowing back through the motor and eliminating another potential part that can fail. Just remember however this is a anti pollution device and so it is illegal to remove it technically speaking (if they even know what / where it is - lol)

I have a spare set of blanking plates around that I would sell cheaply as well - just for info

    Good Luck Matey

Well, as I already had a pair of Blanking Plates(from Black Baz, I think)I decided to just cut the ends off the pipes(the bits that go into the Plenum)and plug the remaining pipes tightly shut. I then fitted the blanking plates using Allen bolts, instead of the original hex-headed bolts(this has got to be easier to do up).

Anyone care to speculate whether this will be OK for the foreseeable future or is there something I have overlooked(advancing age, disintegrating memory plus total confusion when looking at the myriad of little hoses and a forest of wiring)has pretty much dissolved whatever misplaced sense confidence I possessed prior to starting this bloody ill-conceived exercise?(I had no intention of doing any of it, until that damned Injector No.5 decided to quit).:eek::eek:

 Something is not right with that statement.

    This setup would be fine.
I would probably aim to get some kind of sealant on there so that you have a positive seal. Under boost, a poor seal will just shoot PCV crankcase oil all over that area.
I cut the pipes off the stock item, took them to a panelbeater, and got him to MIG it up for a few bucks. you get a more even clamp load on a thicker piece of material.

And whatever other experts may wish to advise, tapping a thread into any intake component downstream of the air filter is a VERY BAD IDEA.

Yep agree but as you should know - tapping EGR pipe is not downstream of the plenum (which is what I originally did). I am assuming that anyone who taps into the plenum would also have done this with the plenum off and thoroughly removed any metal filings etc - try not too assume others are complete dicks and the method is poor based on assumed shortcomings in doing it properly or lack of preparation.

More options is always a good thing as it allows flexibility, regardless of any method being used - it still has to be done right!

Nah, Mitch, nothing wrong with that statement .... back in the day, I provided well over 100 pairs of Blanking Plates as Forum freebies .... and with no degree of exclusivity at all.

Chili, you need to also remove the pipe that goes to the passenger exhaust and plug the threaded hole. I found it easier to use a air chisel to cut the pipe right at the exhaust that way it was easy to get a socket with a heap of extensions on a breaker bar to get it out. Also remove the entire e.g.r by cutting the pipes from the inlet as close as possible to the e.g.r and plug the vacuum hose. I believe you could easily plug all the e.g.r gear while leaving the pipes in place in case Mr. plod ever checks it. There used to be a write up with photos but it looks like it has disappeared.

not a whole lot of fun using stuff from ya std tool-set

but a simple mod to a repco spanner makes the job as easy as ( I don't cut n shut my good tools for anyone !!!)

that spanner now resides on my ZedKit... the home of the special stuff like surgeons clamps / dentists mirror / ratchet spanners and other re-developed screwdrivers / spanners that have been moulded to work within the confines of a ZX's engine-bay
