Correct. We were supposed to turn left out of the Cape Otway Lighthouse road T intersection, then right at the T intersection at Laver's hill but then keep going straight on which would have taken us back to Skene's Creek on the GOR. Unfortunately, as there were no other cars in sight, and that we had gone this way previously it was reasonable for the drivers at the front of the 2nd pack to assume they were going the right way, and by the time the decision had been made to turn towards Colac it was too late for me to intervene being the 2nd last car in the train. So for next time if there's any uncertainty feel free to wait for me and ask for directions as that's why I'm at the back - to make sure no-one gets left behind as I have a rough idea where we're off to next. But hey, live and learn! These are issues that we'll work through in preparation for next year.
Huge thanks to Kingy once again for a great cruise. Just goes to show why GOR is vic's best event. Great to see the old crew again. Had a blast driving, motivation to fix my zed up sooner. Just need to get some solid income first Re getting separated, the circumstances surrounding this weekend added to the problem where there's 0 communication (even internet) thanks to the loss of the rural Telstra tower. Brainstorming for next time, I had an idea keeping 3 or 4 leader cars spread out within the convoy that knows the route. That way there will always be a car for you to follow. If anyone wants to volunteer staying a bit further back in the convoy as secondary/backup leaders who can take everyone to the next meeting location we would be covered for another situation like on Sunday.
great pics everyone, looks awesome! with regards to getting lost, do you gus not give out a direction sheet? over here in WA, everyone gets a sheet with RIGHT turn at smith street LEFT at jones street etc etc as a fail safe so if you get left behind, you can find your way.....people still get lost but its not the end of the world if you have street names to look for etc.
We used to do that in the old days, but that was mainly to get through Geelong's 47 sets of traffic lights which is no longer an issue since the ring road was built. Kingy has made the cruise a bit more dynamic since he took over and some of his routes change during the cruise so it's not really possible to print maps etc. Mike's suggestion makes the most sense, but that requires people who know the area fairly well to put their hands up as support crew as GPS doesn't work that great under the tree cover.
Buying a set of flaky radio devices doesn't seem like a great solution, it's easy to get far enough separated that a radio won't work. Mobile phones could work, give out a few numbers of those who are running the show on the site, anyone who gets lost can call them to get some advice on which way to head. But reception can be crap in those areas... Posting a map of checkpoints online would work, but only if the route was set in stone. The problem is, the "keep the car in your rear view" can fail. In this instance a group had the misfortune to have simply turned the wrong way. Once they started heading in the wrong direction, there's not much we can do to help them. And it can happen easily, all it takes is one car to make the turn and get a bend or two ahead, and suddenly the guys behind him are completely lost. More vigilance with keeping the car behind you in sight seems like the best answer The system works as long as people abide by it. Trying to keep up with the car in front of you just isn't always an option. You can get stuck in slow moving traffic that won't get out of your way...and if the car behind you falls behind, you have to stop for them and hope that the guy in front of you does the same. Maybe another option is more vigilance in the turns off the route. When we're all going straight on the same road it's easy, we got hugely separated before Apollo Bay, but everyone made it. It's when we make a turn off the obvious route that people can easily make a wrong turn, drive a few kms in the wrong direction, and they're gone. Another option is maybe stopping more often to let people catch up. The front-runners must have lost that group a long, long time before where we stopped on the narrow road. And by the time we stopped at Apollo, the guys behind us had been gone for probably an hour. No one wants to have to slow to a crawl to wait for someone, but if the pack stops sooner rather than later we have more of a chance of keeping everyone around. Ps. The pics are fantastic, big thanks to the camera crew. I have some shots I'll upload, mostly shots of the pack cruising the highway and all that, shots that are hard to get unless you have a camera-girl
yeah that was cool... It was nice to see you roaring up the freeway behind me to join up. That little Excel was a weird looking thing... I was pretty surprised to see a bloke driving it, it looked like ...well anyway lol! Later on through the tunnel i joined up with 4 Sylvia's and Gtr's niiice... See you on the next one mate!
Mate niice shots.. You got some really good shots there Mark... I reckon that one of BADXTC is Calendar worthy!
Yeah no doubt my man! I was held up by robbo and Scott and some other cars... The Silvias where actually way back there.... Finally got the chance to stretch the zeds legs bit risky on that road but hey
It's funny to see this pic then in your sig pic is the before shot such a difference! She looked great Adam, I'm glad all your hard effort came together in time
lol Thanks Cam, she has become the dream car I have always wanted and it I haven't stopped smiling at it. I love the exterior, I love the interior I am so happy the project is finally finished and just think without your expertise and help it would have never have been possible. I owe you big time for that mate and if you need help with anything I will do what I can to pay the favour back.
No worries mate it was a pleasure to help out just wanted to see it in a together state and actually driving
After looking at the pics I realised I asked the forum creator if he was a past or future zed owner since he was in the Toyota
What didnt you get to stretch the zeds legs beforehand? I certainly did, think me and aidan both crapped our pants at one stage.
Yeah, I was some what amused by that. Mostly because it's a clear sign he should get himself another Zed.
Held up!? It's a 3 lane highway! The time for leg stretching was done in the 12 hours prior, by that stage I just wanted to set the cruise and cover the ~100 kms back home trouble free didn't you see the lights from the guy who got pulled over in the other lane just outside our turnoff? Also, nailed the speed readout bridge at 100 exactly
Leg stretching as in fast! Not "fast for twisties there was plenty of that I got held up when it was two lanes only, robbo you lane hogger! I saw the police back there so I knew I was right due to that would be the cop working the area.... And I was doing the speed limit later on... Although I had cruise on and the bridge said 103 damn it!
thank you sir . i just got my gopro hero 3 black . now i need to get 1 or 2 more cameras for the front bar one day late lol all good , im going to organise a drive to frankston soon just for a small drive
DAMMIT CAM, I'M SICK OF YOUR RECKLESS ATTITUDE. Nah that's cool, just hope you didn't get stung by 500 speed cameras. Haha, camera comes the day after the cruise :\ My album Quite a few good shots, some nice ones of the procession of cars coming down the road, though Photobucket reduced their size a little :< Also a very nice shot of that Purple Z. Dunno who owns that one, but it's very nice. Anyone on the forum? Frankston Zs owning the road:
