Heys i just finished replacing my coil pack connectors and i have discovered ive just cooked one of my coil packs. I must wired the bloody connector wrong. Will it be ok to drive home tonight and get a replacement coil later? Always happens to me:mad:

You will be shooting some tiny flames from your exhaust for each stroke that unburnt fuel from that cylinder hit's the exhaust manifold...

What's the distance that you need to travel?

Will drive well enough, probably foul up the cat a bit though. Maybe unplug the injector on the failed cylinder too.

Thanks for the tip. I just got home drive the car about 50 kms with highway driving most of thw way. It is rough to drive at low speeds but was not vad on the freeway. Ill try and look into the problem tomorrow. God i feel like a complete idiot.

If you can you can undo spark-plug of that cylinder a bit just too loose compression on that cylinder, that would help with drive-ability.

Thank you all for the suggestions ill disconnect the injector connector and remove the spark plug while i wait for a replacement coil.

I once had a 'dodgy' coil pack.
It was IIRC a short to earth within the unit.

Overfuelling killed 2 sets of cat converters (one as they were failing, one when they had failed). One even started the underbody sound deadening to smoulder because the cats were cherry red.
The inabililty of the coilpack to build voltage in its coil also killed a few PTU's which were trying to continually charge the coil to its operating voltage before it breaks its earth to fire the spark plug.

50 kays... 45 min drive, Just source a spare and install then drive normally. It may run like a pig otherwise, but it's know that there are also other risks.

Just an update ive corrected the incorrectly wired coil pack connector and amazingly the car is idleing and driving much better now. Its still not 100% but im going to source a replacement coil asap and i hopefully should have it all fixed by the end if the week.

I know it was a risk driving it with the nad coil which i disconnected the trip home. But it was 11pm i was tired frustrated and just wanted to be home with my family.

I had read people had driven their cars with bad coils on the net for a period of time until they diagnosed the problem and replaced the coil so i knew i could drive it hom. But it was just to get me home i had all intentions of disconnecting the injector as suggest by fist to reduce fuel entering the cats. I can only hope my 50 km drive hasnt caused any more damage and ill monitor and minimse driving the car until the coil is replaced.

Thank you everyone for your tips and suggestions.

You will be extremely lucky if you haven't done serious damage to the Cylinder Bore/Piston rings in the offending cylinder. Where do you imagine Lubrication for the dead cylinder/piston combo would come from?(not forgetting that almost ALL of the unburned Fuel will have also diluted/contaminated the oil in your sump)thereby reducing/removing the protection for ALL the moving parts in the Engine.
You will need to dump ALL of the engine oil, Flush the engine using a "Flushing Oil" or similar, change the Oil Filter Cartridge and refill the sump with NEW oil.
IF you are extremely lucky, that just may save you from a complete engine rebuild.
P.S. You aren't the first to run into this problem(and you certainly WON'T BE THE LAST!!!):zlove::br:

Luckly i am intending to do that this weekend as part of a regular service. I understand this is not ideal i only need to rough it for a few more days till the replacement coil pack is here. I am only driving the car two and from work until the coil is replaced, which is the best i can do really. I am hearing all 9f your warnings about the danger trust me but im broke due to spending $700 on a service for the car for this weekend, its xmas time which is really the worst time to do this kind of thing and all i can do is live with my mistake and learn from it. I also didnt prepare enough and know the dangers of this task before attempting it which i thought would be easy as pie to do. Guess i was dead wrong.

At least make sure you unplug the injector for that cylinder. It'll sound and drive like a tractor but you shouldn't ruin it.

Injector connector is now removed and the coil pack is disconnected. Unfortunately while removing the quick disconnect injector connector i lose the locking clip into the depths of the engine bay. Do ulyou guys think it will be a problem without the locking clip when i put the injector connector back on?

Been running mine without them for years now... because I'm a lazy bastard.
The longest part of a plenum pull is removing those ****ing clips.

Great i was thinking like OMG i just cant do anything right atm. Still I search the net to see if I could find the locking clips and it appears I have bosch type injector connectors which i can buy from the states for $2.00 so I figure Ill buy a spare connector and take the locking clip off that one. Problem solved.

With the injector and coil disconnected I feel better knowing I am not adding any further damage to the car. hopefully I can avoid any problems like this during the service on the weekend.

Again thank you guys for your suggestions and input. Hopefully this thread may help other members one day in the future if the same thing happens to them they can see the issues with running the Z with a bad coil can be and use the suggestions posted here to minimise any damage to the engine.

    Update

Well guys my replacement coil came in today and after installing everything back together the Z is purring like a kitten again. I would again like to thank everyone who posted advice and info to help me through this whole saga. I have learnt my lesson that's for sure and I will try and be more prepared for working on the Z in the future so I can avoid things like this happening.

I also thought Id post up the aftermath damage suffered by my original coil and its not pretty.

When I started the car I heard a snap/click sound and when I turned the car off and checked the engine bay this coil was smoking out of the top of the coil. Guess I blow it up pretty good. Word to the wise, don't incorrectly wire a coil pack connector you can do this to your coil pack.
