Door handles. Who has handles that rub the paint and seem deformed?

So im in the process of prepping the small things like mirrors and door handles for respray. I've noticed the levers have been rubbing through the existing paint and even back into the aluminium surrounds. I'm tempted to totally disassemble them and message what needs to be messaged to get then to sit flush again, but i feel they're too far gone.

I've added a pic of mind where they rub. Where the red arrow is. Let me know if you have the same issue, perhaps resolved the issue. And if I'm wasting my time and should source better conditioned handles.

If you get those aftermarket chromed handles from that Japa ese website, then you don't have to paint/colour match.

Whole car is getting resprayed so no biggie with the colour matching issue.

I ended up completely disassembling one and metal finishing the lever and the housing to allow for clearance. Being alloy I think over the years of pulling on the handle its warped the lever. Fractionally too hard to beat it back to shape, so for now I'm just making to room for some clearance and will worry about replacements another time.

I also did think about getting so chromed. Might have a look into it.

    Cheers

    yes mine too...

Yes, mine do it too. Its annoying, considering that I had the car painted. The handles are not deformed as such, but they have scrubbed up the paint a little. You can hardly see it though due to the angle...

Thanks teky. It sounds like you did what I ended up doing last night. However at 10pm I didn't want to crank up the compressor so i did one with small hand files and emery paper. Pita job. Got it to clear but might do some more. Funny how such small things take up the longest time.

What did you do in regards to the pin that secures the lever and spring into the housing? I had to file and drill out the crimped end to get it to pass through. I'm looking to replace it with a long 4 or 5mm bolt and lock nut.

How did you approach this? (forgive me if it's in that link, I haven't read it yet)

Jedi. It's for your reasons I want to get then right. Nothing worse then having a fresh paint job and having small scratches appear soon after, albeit door handles. But same applies.

Will update you with what I end up doing/finishing with.

    Cheers.

Bugger, one more thing to think about.

Anti, there are pics of chromed door handles on that Japanese website.

you can buy new from coz? not cheap, but if your planning on keeping the car for a while nice new handles could be a good investment in "rejuvenating" the car

I managed to file the pins sides down a bit then belted the pins out with a flat punch. Seemed to work ok. When I put them back together I used a centre punch to slightly flare the pins. Worked well. Never had a problem with them coming loose.

    Same thing happened here...

Got the door handles painted and the clear is being scrapped off slowly due to door handle rubbing.

Glad to see this is not just isolated to my Z. I also find it annoying.

With the key illumination, how does that work. Can these rings that fit inside the lock barrel still be purchased?
Also with wiring. There is no wiring with a small light hanging around the door to plug into the lock barrel illumination ring.

Also, could not see a door handle switch to activate the illumination.

It appears that some Z's were not fitted with this. Must have been an option.

If this worked, it would be a nice touch, i think!!

The light pipes are there for it. I dont think I have ever seen a z32 with them actually working.

Funnily enough after I posted that link years ago. Those light pipes along with the clear rings near the lock broke into a hundred bits so I couldnt reuse them.

I managed to find some round black square edged Orings at the bearing shop and I replaced those white rings with them. They looked fine afterward.

Yep, most do it. I remember when I got my car painted, to fix the handle scraping issue the panel beater stuck a steel rule in between the handle and surround and pushed on the ends of the handle. Seems to have worked. I assume that it's bent (re-bent??) the handle into its original shape so it doesn't scrape.

The pipes are incredibly delicate but you must get them spotless for them to work correctly and with any brightness, better having a spare set of handles to hand

I've wired mine to come on with the lights, I've just directed a 10mm led bulb at the diffuser pipe and fixed with silicone.

    Thanks everyone for your feedback.

Graham, I had to drill the flared end off before I could punch the pin out. Tried filing it down but no good. Bought some M5 x 120mm long Allen key head bolts with lock nuts to replace if. Should work fine.

As for the light diffuser. I've cleaned mine up and play to wire them up...yet to decide which way to do this but I'm keen for it.

Dangerous, I tried rebending them but didn't want to apply too much force in leu of braking them. I've just filed them down and smoothed the housing for clearance.

These small jobs take so long go get right, haha.

    Cheers
