I'm sure that someone will correct me if I am wrong, but isn't a Nistune just a ROM emulator? I noticed in the recent GB that most people only bought the board and not the software, suggesting that someone else was going to do the actual tuning. I also noticed in a recent T/Yoshi thread that he said he uses his nistune and software if you don't have one and then burns the tune to a blank ROM. Not sure on the exact cost of a ROM but it's got to be under $10. Once you get your tune you're probably not going to want to have it done again anytime soon - it's an expensive exercise. Maybe I'm missing something. Cheers, Evan.
True but that's only while it's being tuned. After that Nistune just pretends to be one of these http://www.futurlec.com/ICEPROM.shtml Most of them are under $4! Than's my current understanding anyway.
do most people need a Selin kit? no. nistune is just another must have, hard on mod for forum members.
You're missing the point that a Nistune conversion is relatively cheap compared to an aftermarket ECU with similar capabilities. In addition I gained a slight HP increase once the Nistune was tuned over a Mines ECU which gave a slight increase over the OEM unit. A Nistune ECU can be run in an auto or manual TT or NA, that's versatility & expands the resale market. If at some stage engine modifications are made the Nistune ecu can be adjusted to suit. I have the license, not really interested in tuning as such, more interested in the diagnostics.
I agree that logging might be good but most can be done through the consult port. As far as my understanding goes Nistune does not add any extra capabilities to the existing ECU.
I think your right EvZ. For $100 I will loan you a Nistune equipped ECU (plus deposit) uploaded with your existing tune and on return will burn a chip for you to fit to your ECU that I have socketed while you got your tune done. For $100 you can get the dyno tune done and chipped, subsequent loan is $50. Probably a good way to go for most.
But if you need a retune you take the car back to where you got it tuned in the first place, they use their legitimate, paid for Nistune and license and then burn you another $4 Eprom
The tuning software is still required by the tuner and unless you intend to make adjustments yourself the software is completely unnecessary for most owners. Yes hiring out an ECU and burning a chip and socketing the original ECU. Nothing outrageous there, most people pay $50 to get their ECU socketed, and maybe $50plus for a chip. I am just giving people the ability to get there car dynoed for a custom tune and fitted with a chip.
Yes of course, although I'd expect the tuner to have that equipment. I actually have a chip burner myself (that I've never used ). I think that it cost $30.
Evs is right an eprom costs $4ish. But you dont just need one. In my experience, they dont 'all' work, so you need a bunch for every few changes you make. Plus the hassel of acquiring, burning and installing the chips. Each change needs a new chip. Further chance of damaging the ecu everytime you get into it. I would prefer nistune over owning dozens of chips hiding around the place being a hassel. A saved file and the click of a button is easier and safer. I consider nistune cheaper than a drawer full of chips.
Well if you do not have some one available who can put there nistune ECU in your car to tune it on the fly, then burn the chip once it is done, then the nistune will result in a more finely tuned unit then a chip which has just been burned off logs. Also, if you need to have it retuned later after a mod, It is much easier to just adjust the nistune values and will take less time. So really $200 is not much
I wasn't suggesting that the chip be burned off 'logs'. All I'm saying is that after your car has been personally tuned using Nistune is there any good reason to have it in the car when the results of a Nistune tune can be burned to a standard EPROM?
Pretty much just being able to remap it with little fuss. Pretty sure it does not add any extra capabilities of what the ECU can actually do.
And the emulator to go withit? And know hex? Nistune is just easier. If you aren't going to do any further mods then just a tune and chip will work fine.
