Hey guys, I am going to have my engine pulled and seals replaced due to a heavy oil leak, I also have a pretty bad exhaust leak. The guy I took it to said the cats need replacing and some other work. I was quoted $1500 for the engine and exhaust work including parts and labour.

Anyone know if this is reasonable or do you guys know of a really good place in brisbane I can go to?

I can't do this work myself as I suck.

    Thanks :)

for an engine pull, with parts, that's pretty cheap. However, 99% of oil leaks can be resolved with the motor in and intake plenum pulled- generally cam cover related

Yeah I get that, he said there was pools of oil under there and its blowing smoke out of my exhaust sometimes so he said it was probably a good idea to just pull it out and do a thorough job and possibly replace clutch since the motor is out

Since you have a Turbo, there are a few preventative things to do while the engine is out, use the search function on this forum and the tech section.

Hope you have found a Z-expert mechanic.

I was once quoted $4000 to get started, for an engine out job to do a head gasket on a 2+2 turbo. Well that didn't happen.

has the plenum pull and 200k service been done? Be prepared for your $1500 to blow out a wee bit otherwise. Would be beneficial to do all of that while the motor is out.

Get in contact with Karl/ 90TTZ and have him take a look over it. Will be able to give you a much more accurate idea of exactly what needs doing

Mate I'm going through the exact same thing right now.
I got new hiflow cats installed as I thought that would be my smoke issue $740.
I was wrong still lots of smoke.
Engine was leaking like a bitch even after all front seals had been replaced twice in 3weeks. Still so much oil.
My mechanic rang a rebuild shop an explained what was going on and why does my engine keep popping these seals.
they said first thing check the compression.
Surely enough it was down to 90. The best they could do was release the pressure by putting an oil catch can as a bandaid fix to get me through . But really I'm up for a new engine or rebuild .
I'm just trying to work out what is worth my money and the long run.

My advice to you before you hand over stacks of cash is get your mechanic to do a compression test.
If it's down to much you will just keep popping your seals an oil will keep pissing out and you've waisted your money.

Sorry I couldn't give you more good news.
This might not be your issue but it sounds the same as mine so just a heads up as iv just waisted the amount of money figuring this out that could have bought me a new engine

    You've raised two relevant points.
Firstly, a compression test is a valuable guide to the condition of the engine.
As you've unfortunately learned, there's no point 'fixing' a worn out engine with a few new parts.
Secondly, if your mechanic had to ring & ask about your issue, find another mechanic.

    Point taken
After the car webt back to the shop 4 times at their expense and coming to this conclusion any further work will be in the hands of Rollin from this forum. Lucky for me he lives half hour away.

Moral of this while story don't take a zed to your general down the st mechanic

    Hahaha

All the best anything else is find out I'll swing your way
