    Hey Zedman!

This literally happened to me a few weeks ago, driving along then lost gears. Turns out the transmission had overheated and died.

It is very common for the transmission oil lines to get blocked, happens to the older patrols as well if they are left not driven for a while.

You can rebuild your auto for 3-4k excluding installation and also I suggest installing a transmission cooler. I bought a second hand one and installed a transmission cooler, hasn't missed a beat.

Can be a misaligned torque converter, but unless you've been taking the transmission in and out, I doubt it.

P.S The guys around here will help you when they can, sometimes it's very active and sometimes not.

    Hi moskita

yep pretty quite on here huh used to be buzzing with activity spose most have moved to f book.

cleaning out filters and lines see how it goes if not it;s comming out,
then the choice to be made rebuild or swap to manual will work out around same outlay.

the alternative is no one can give an accurate suggestion based on the info and the fact they are not looking at it in person, I myself have no idea what the issue is, I know in other cars that we used to thrash in the bush and the like we used to burn the transmission fluid up and have to drain it and refill it every day or so - slamming it into reverse at 60+kmph does that - But I am pretty sure this sort of comment does not apply to you so I have said nothing. I would imagine I am not the only one in this position - that is a position where we cant give any viable feedback.

Are you sure the "spacer" isn't the magnet?
Auto sumps have a magnet usually on the lowest side of the sump to catch all the little wear and tear bits of metal.

Check if it is magnetic, the one in the photo of the sump/pan is definitely the magnet but I'm not sure if that's what you're referring too.

Edit. Ignore my statement originally only the pan photo loaded, now I see there is the top photo with the brass item.

Come on guys, you can't have at go at the forum
We do help eachother alot, even with technical things.

Go call a mechanic workshop and send them that photo. Most will tell you to bring it to them.
It's hard to diagnose something just by going off what someone says and not actually being able to see the issue in person.

The problem with alot of people on this forum and others is they expect everything to be done quickly and cheap.
    That's not always possible

I can give an accurate suggestion.

    Its buggered !

    How do I know ?

Because its a gearbox and it doesn't go forward or back, therefore it is buggered.

in 97.34532 times out 100 when you have lost a forward and or reverse, and you have shrapnel in the pan, its buggered.

The cost of just removing and refitting the trans with fluid is a big slice of the rebuild cost, and generally if they have to open it further then the valve body, they will need to remove the box (which I say they will) you just go the rebuild, as you will only save pennies, fixing what is just the problem and most shops wouldn't do it any way.

There are other options buying a second hand box and fitting it yourself etc etc.

This tread has a few perspectives and ideas on approach and price.

When my auto died, I got quoted $6000 for a complete conversion to manual. If you can get the parts and do it all yourself, I think someone told me it's about $2000 all up for parts.

Finding a second hand transmission would be your cheapest option $200-400. A re-conditioned auto is about $3000-4000 installled that's with 3 year warranty.

Prices are what I was quoted, you might get a cheap guy.

    import wreckers

I think someone a while back said that the later model Nissan Cima box is a direct fit, you may be able to pick one up quite cheap and then either get it fitted or fit yourself. Hope this helps :)
