Can anyone help me find the specification in the service manual for the amount of allowable play in the upper control arms. I've looked through the manual and cannot find it. I believe it is not where one would logically think it is but it is eluding me. I believe it to be 10 mm but looking for some written evidence of this.

    Thanks in advance :)

I think the answer you seek would be zero.

Is the OP referring to play in UCA bush?

It seems that the cost of replacing the bush in OEM UCA is a lot more than just replacing the whole thing with aftermarket adjustible

This. It's bushed so there should be movement as you compress the rubber but no play in any direction.

In the UK the vehicle testing stations (for our annual road worthiness tests) were issued this notice which gives the amount of free movement allowed:

Interesting information, thanks for posting it. ;)

However, the correct dimension is 5.0mm MAXIMUM. :D

Not 6.4mm as specified in the attachment.

But where did the 5mm measurement come from?
I am 100% sure I have seen the documentation directly from Nissan myself but for what ever reason I can't find it now

You won't believe where the 5.0mm measurement came from. :D
The Nissan Factory Service Manual.

However, it is located in a very obscure location, somewhere the average person would never think to look, for this kind of information..........

The Front Axle & Front Suspension Section (FA).

But not all editions of the FSM. The page dealing with FUCA tolerances is not in my '90 UK copy of the FSM or the '90
edition for the US. It does however appear in later US FSM editions that I have ('94,'95 and '96). Now that you pointed
it out I went and looked at all of them!

I don't know why UK vehicle testing stations were given 6.4mm, but it would have been in our favour by being more generous.

Attached is the page from the US '94 FSM:
