Please excuse my mechanical ignorance but would it be a viable proposition to bolt on some stock Zed turbos onto a 308 GMH engine.? What would be the approximate realistic life expectancy of the engine keeping in mind it has only just been run in ? I'm a bit concerned about piston temperatures and compression ratio's and generally using something that it wasn't designed for. I'm only thinking of this crazy idea because I have an excellent 308 and pair of good turbo's needing a useful home AND a crazy kiwi mate who wants me to build a 308 V8,TT,trike.!! Any help is very much appreciated, Col
Re : 308 V8 Twin Turbo...... One pair of near perfectly matched turbos off a 185cu in. 7000rpm motor bolted onto a 308cu in. 5250rpm motor........ you do the maths
My thought... sell the turbos and with the money, pour that into the 308 (ie: heads, cam, extractors, electronic ignition etc... Dirt cheap to do up old V8's... turbo'ing a freshly built 308 would mean removing the heads to lower compression ... + the resulting other headaches like pressurising the carby ... etc etc etc etc An even better alternative is to still sell the turbos AND the 308 and get a stout chev 350 ... these put out ~ 300HP at the flywheel stock... add carby, cam, electronic ignition and extractors would give it similar output as a mildly modded VG30DETT...
A turbo setup is good and has been done alot but for a V8 i rather a blower... You dont really have to lower the comp when fitting the turbos... Turbos love hi comp motors.. You just got to make sure you got the right combo... But since its already a freashy built motor no point slapping on the turbos as you might just blow it up... Old v8's easy to work on and you can see where the money is spent... nice lumpy cam head work carbies extractors and exhaust system to suit with a nice blower on top and your laughing... Dont stroke the motor tho... you get more power from using a blower then stroking the motor... Or you could go the 350 chev option... It really depends how much power and money you want to put into them... Lots of things you can do just depends how much you have already spent and how much more you want to do to it...
Thanks heaps guys Really appreciate the heads up on this and yes its been taken as far as I can besides ie,blower. I bought this before I bought my Z as I had originally intended building an AC Cobra replica and using the 308 dedicated on gas, (as I already have the entire drive train + gas components.) But the project became a distant memory the first moment my eyes laid upon a sexed up 300zx, it really was love at first sight. :zlove: :zlove: :zlove: Thanks again,Guys
Yeah that i can understand hehe I still love my V8's but i love my zed :zlove: Nothing can beat the rumble of a nice carbie V8... EFi v8's sound like tins hitting each other... Nice so you got alot of work done to it hey... all you need now is a nice blower and you will get more HP Gas on carbie v8's are so much better... with efi you are killing the motor... and dedicated gas even better for the carbie hehe Dont you love the smell of old v8's on avgas hehe
2X TD04's + 308 = 9sec commonwhore Knew a VH in melbourne 10 years ago that had that setup and ran 9 sec 1/4 mile. Used to do the drags around pizza hut in ferntree gully rd. Was that powerful the guy that owned it wouldnt race it! instead anyone that thought they were up to the challenge they guy would get his mechanic to race it!
Mate this thing has a 4 barrel manifold of course with a quadrajet and it sounds like thunder starting up in my garage(extractors only)lol. Its not installed in anything but I have a brand new turbo 400 attached to it at the moment and after connecting the radiator and extractors, I fired it up and boy does it draw a crowd real quick. Yes they are very impressive and I just can't bring myself to sell it as I always wanted a really good one but now I'm trying to think of ways to get some real fun and life out of it,ie,speedboat, rally car, buggy, trike because I cant justify dropping it in any sedan, hmmm maybe a nice one tonner but. lol, thanks for the info mate, god I love this forum I'm still learning heaps everyday, cheers mate, Col
Nice get some video of it hehe i bet everyone rush over to view hey... How about dropping it in a torrie? light weight + 308 = sideways action hehe Yeah i know of a VH with the plate TTVH is turboed but yeah turbos are good but the motor is already built so would hate to undo it all and having to rebuilt it to comp with the turbos... I rather a supercharger on my V8's tho But yeah v8's are always good tho
