Hi, After about 5 weeks of procrastinating. I finally pulled the finger out & this is what I ended up with.

    • 4 Channel JL amp bridged to 2 channels powering the front splits.
    • Monoblock Pioneer powering the JL 10" Sub
    • Put some dynamat sound deadening on the boot floor. Too lazy to do the sides. But I think I will do the top of the hatch (under the window, where the spoiler sits)

    PROs
    • quite roomy, spare tire should still fit (don't currently have one), My mountain bike should also fit.
    • Amp looks really cool mounted on an angle

    CONs
    • AMP is in direct sunlight - gets very hot. I overheated it during testing while stationary on a warm day. I hope it won't overheat while driving (with airflow from open roof/window or air-con)
    • Amp is clearly visible through rear window, attracting unwanted attention
    • Although spare tire room is not disturbed, tools / jack trays have been removed.

    Further Work
    • Tidy up cabling
    • carpet or paint MDF mounting board.
    • Create sun shade for amp.
    • more sound deadening
    • Redesign Sub box
    • Install new splits & sound deadening in doors.

I thought I'd post this to give people ideas. And also to ask If anyone else has amps mounted in clear view. Do they get hot? and have you done anything to address the problem.

I think that amp might be getting a smidgin too hot.Its going to be right next to the rear hatch glass. The glass will be 50 degrees easily without power on,Im no expert but I think amps have to be well ventilated.

Perhaps cut the carpet that backs up the seat, then make a solid board and mount all the way across the seat then mount amps, run wires down under the seat,so the seat is still adjustable.

since you like the amp in that position, putting some sort of shade over it will ruin your rear vision. have you thought of getting the hatch and windows tinted? less visible amp, less attention, less heat.

as long as the window is tinted, the amp shouldnt have a problem. in my falcon i had a 800w rms monoblock mounted on the rear seat-back, and it was sandwiched between the mount and the boot-mounted lpg tank. ran it hot once last february having the stereo cranked for over half hour.

be sure to include your stereo in your insurance policy, i dont think its a big cost difference but may be worth the headache.

i'm sorry man but i have to say that looks hideous...

for the 2 amps why not mount them to the back of the chair?
    -out of the sun
-slightly harder to see from outside
    -still plenty of room
-not a fire hazard under carpet
-looks a hell of alot neater

how is the mdf platform mounted exactly? amps being quite weighty I can see you taking a hard corner and it flying over to the other side.

zano is correct here, i mounted my amp on the parcel shelf (2 seater) and while aesthetically looks good i had to cover it up as on a hot day in the sun it just bakes and goes into safety mode (won't come on again until satisfactorily cool)

if you are going to mount it there i would cover it up a bit

That was one of my first ideas. But there's less usable space there than you'd think. Should be able to put 1 amp dead center.
I also wanted to keep that area clear, for when the seat is folded down.

The amp is mounted on a wedge constructed out of several boards. And is attached to the plastic by about half a dozen screws. I wouldn't wanna lean on it, but It's not going to fly off.

So far when I park it, I've been covering it up with a car floor mat, or a towel. I think I drove around with the car mat on there, and my vision wasn't obstructed. But since I hadn't attached it in anyway the mat flew off after a few turns.

Hatch & windows are tinted to darkest legal tint.

mount the amps to the back of the seat. leave enuff slack in the wiring so you can still put the seat down to fit the bike.
