Replace the shifter bush if it feels loose sloppy, drop the oil in the g/b, fill it up with redline mt90(do this anyway if you haven't already), dive it round for a couple weeks, see if it improves, other than that it could be plain ware and tare.

Do you have an aftermarket shifter (short shifter)?

i think the shifter is standard and im certain the bush is ok . and if it were normal wear n tear it would be a common issue

If your external shift selector bushes are all good and there is no play, then it has to be internal in my view. Usually when gearboxs pop out of gear on overrun/back-off its because the gear has not been fully engaged/selected. Sometimes the case hardening on sector fork fails and the fork gets worn and doesnt fully engage, in your case 3rd gear.

Change the gearbox oil first. You don't know how old it is. Probably the original. Remember to always remove the fill plug first because if you remove the drain one first then find you cannot refill you will be in a world of pain.

It can only be 3 things really, linkages, low trans fluid, fucked synchros.

If it's not low on gearbox oil and there's nothing wrong with the linkage, your 3rd gear synchro is gone. Luckily Z32 gearboxes aren't silly money yet, you could probably pickup another in good working order under $1k.
