Hi all, just wondering WTF this stuff is on the bottom edge of the front guards, doors and sills. It's applied or stuck on, not clipped or bolted. Is it a Nissan OEM thing? Stuffed if I know how I'm supposed to paint such a surface. Bottom edge of drivers side front guard:
Oem Nissan, it's a spray on coating ....... I've never really understood the purpose of it (perhaps it reduces stonechips ???) Most people sand the stuff off when they do a respray because it would be difficult to replicate
Thanks Ian. I'll see how much of a PITA it is to remove, or maybe I'll just etch prime it and fill the bumps.
Stone guard. It's a spray on tar like substance that gives that type of texture. Black normally, sets not quite hard, but you can paint over it. Used to protect surfaces from stones that are flying from spinning tires that are in turn practically sand-blasting the under side of the car. Unprotected the stones would remove paint allowing to the car to rust out from underneath you, which is a bad thing.... unless you're going for the Flintstones car look.
Best to remove stone guard from area you are repairing, then reapply once repair is completed. You can buy Stoneguard from Super cheap Auto, real easy to apply and keeps the OEM look
Have just done this. You can remove it with chemical stripper or more cleanly with something like this... https://www.bunnings.com.au/3m-4-in...er-abrasive-disc_p6314180?gclsrc=ds&gclsrc=ds The spray on stone guard from SCA or Repco is fine as long as you can paint over it. It is textures right out of the can. The only other tip is just do one coat and see how it comes out. Don't go heavy with multiple coats as you can create air chambers and it can look quite rough when painted over.
Ive removed the ugly stone guard sputum completely, did it with a softish wire wheel, came of easy, but marked scratched/feathered the rear bumper, just sanded it back. Its been sputum free for 15 years, dont have any paint chips, because I don t drive on shit gravel roads when I can avoid it. Still looks good now.
Great information, thanks everyone. Beaver that looks awesome! Are they BBS wheels? What tyres? Did you black out the chrome trim? Looking for cosmetic inspiration
Thanks lem, there anz wheels, The roof trim was originally black, I stripped the old faded coating of the trim and repainted them all with a good quality saturn black. They look like new all these years later. tyres are michelin supper sport piolet. 245x18x45 F 275x18x35 R
Mine is chrome but loving the look of black. Wheels are only limited by my imagination and budget, so probably a set of stockies Got any more photos? What spoiler do you have?
Thanks! I think I like the no spoiler look. I suppose I could add one later though I hear those infil bits are spendy. Either way, I hope mine ends up as nice as yours (might be a bit optimistic but you gotta dream)
Hello, yes its a urethane spray on stone guard. I too removed it from our zed some years ago prior to respray to give the bottom of the car a smooth finish. Metal body panels I used a heat gun and a scraper and it all come off like butter. For the bumpers I used grit sandpaper and an orbital sander and it all comes off pretty well. Gums up the paper but its not terrible to deal with. #bumpinganoldpost hahaah
