Hey everyone, I've been on a bit of a hiatus for about 10 years after writing off my old Z.... Sad times.

But I've now found a new project car (1990 NA auto 2 seat) for a bit of an out of the ordinary build! Now I know a lot of peeps disagree with the idea of a blown VG30DE, as a TT swap is easier and will net more HP......... But aren't you just curious? I know I am!
And really, I'm aiming for unique...... and a little bit of badass.

The initial build will run relatively low boost of about 4-5psi on the stock NA motor - When I cook that I'll do a low comp build and up the boost to a respectable level. The charger is an Eaton M90 and I'm custom fabricating a new manifold/plenum that will sit atop the original valley manifold. The fan will be replaced with a thermo and a drive pulley mounted in place of the fan (And a probably upgrade of the belt to take the additional load)

So I'll post photos as the build progresses, at the moment I've stripped the interior to mostly clean and repair a lot of wiring, broken trims, install a stereo etc before all the interior goes back in and also removed the rear hatch, glass (That took about 8hrs with a stanley knife and assortment of cheap kitchen knives!!) to do a rust repair around the glass. It's been welded back up, shaped and treated with phosphoric acid to kill the remaining rust and will be puttied and undercoat in the next week or two.

The plenum is getting pulled this week to take measurements and start fabricating the new manifold to mount the blower - Should be some great pics coming up when that happens!

I'll also be looking for some tech advice here and there if people can help.

    Cheers!

That is out of the ordinary.
I say good stuff, am always up for something different.
Will be interesting to see how the response is.
    Sticking with the auto?

Good luck with the project. I've always wondered why someone hadn't had a go at putting a blower on a VG. A blower will give you strong bottom end but they run out up top, usually from heat soak to the intake charge. That's where turbos do the job over a blower, but the hell with that, I'm old school too. You should try and aim to fit some sort of inter-cooler as the M90 works pretty well as a heat pump. I'm currently running the M112 and about to swap over to the M122. The later generation blowers are much more efficient than the early ones. If you keep the blower speed down you might be ok or go for E85. You can also try your hand at porting the blower as that can also improve its efficiency. I port mine and flow test them before and after. Water meth also helps and can raised boost if squirted into the blower. I gained another 1 - 1.5 lb at lower intake temps. If your able to get the blower tucked down low enough to clear the hood you will still need bump in the hood over the drive pulley. 75mm is the smallest pulley you'll find for an Eatons. Thats what I use and have a 30mm baby bump in the hood to clear. Don't give up the challenge there are plenty of internet mechanics around who preach crap like they are experts however truth is few can speak from experience. Good luck.

I got to ask. Would it possible to have a blower and turbo's ?. I'm thinking great bottom and top.
    Cheers

Cheers all. Yeah I was wondering what I could do cooling wise, the manifold will be pretty small though. I was thinking methanol, but will see.
Once the manifold is tacked together, i'll see what kind of room I have to incorporate a water to air cooler.

And yeah, I'd have loved a manual, but this was close and at the right price. I'll keep the auto as is and when I eventually end up building the decomp motor i'll look into an auto build or manual conversion.

I'm actually most worried about the base line tune when it's all together! lol. Was going to change to TT injectors, so can calculate lower duty based on the flow rate - But what to do when the revs go up?

Ivan129 - What's your M112 siting on top of? Whats the engine?

I'm a fan! Should be good :D I really like supercharged cars, lovely to drive. Going to be a tight fit getting the snout in the right place and under the bonnet. Might need a little bump in it to clear.

    TT injectors and Nistune ECU.

Good to see someone doing something different :)

Manifold is an off the shelf Bullet. Mine was a pretty grubby casting though. Took quite a few hours of port work to clean it up and port match with the heads. I made a flow bench to measure flow rates from manifold to intake opening and exhaust valve down to collector, just because I can. At the end of the day I'll never know if I gained or lost anything but made me feel good for doing it. Engine is a 1UZ with plenty of goodies in it. There guys who will claim the Nissan V8 is a better choice and makes more power... well thats a big myth. The 1UZ is a better fit and makes comparable power provided you tickle the heads in the right places and get rid of the std intake. I also run an auto but its a little tricked up and has tiptronic.

TT injectors and nistune with a tt map as a base, I'd pull quite a lot of timing though.

We have a chap doing the same in our 4x4 club with his 1999 pajero.... 1UZ with a M112 on it.... just waiting on the custom wiring loom to suit the aftermarket ecu he has.

I would love to know what the OP is using for a manifold adapter though, I would love to mount similar on my v6 Pajero I am currently sorting out my SC14 install on it but as above its a heatpump and I am having to look at some sort of intake cooling. unfortunatley there is no room to run pipes or fit an intercooler

Well the manifold fabrication is in very early days. Plenum off for measurements and to get to the injectors...... Looks like some oil weeping from rocker covers too. Will also bypass all the manifold pre-warming stuff and EGR while I'm here.
I'm considering modding the intake cam rocker covers to give a lower manifold as I will be looking at about a 75mm protrusion on the pulley through the bonnet! Although, that would look awesome - I'd better check what the maximum legal is.......
With a manifold height of 90mm and 70mm internal to play with - I could look at a small and basic water/air cooler - But thinking that it would be too small to do anything and will just go with methanol injection I think.

If you google you find that Ridgewood used to make a manifold for the 1UZ however I think they have gone out of business. Most twin screw blowers are mounted close to the intake to keep the drive belt short. The problem then becomes a challenge to dissipate the heat from the compressed intake air. You will always get more power from turbo/s but that power will be mid to up top and you have to go fast to make use of it. A blower gives you that fun grunt down low. It would be good to see a few more blown projects on here.

I can't wait to see this finished. It was always Dream of mine to do this when I had my na.

I didn't think you needed cooling till the pressures started to go up over 6psi just from what I've seen. Not based on fact.

    Do some maths maybe, http://www.autospeed.com/cms/article.html?&title=Intercooler-Maths&A=109789

I also recall something about reducing air temp by 4 degrees only resulting in 1hp increase. In other words cooling is more about engine safety. Or just add heaps of fuel to cool it.surely you'll run an aftermarket ecu anyway. But I'm definatly not a boost boffin.

Ok - Its been a little while since I've updated this........ But decided to as I have hit a small milestone (Well a few of them!)

So since the last post, the hatch has been completely repaired and re-installed.
The seats have had new trims put on them and most interior parts replaced or repaired where possible.
The targas have been repaired (The locking mechanisms wouldn't work).

And the big one - The manifold has been welded! Just needs finishing with the die grinder to shape the ports, drill and tap then the motor comes out to start on the drive system!

Nice we put a L76 into my mates crewman i think anything over 10 psi needs an intercooler under the blower unless your running a cooler fuel his is running on 98, as you guys are doing a custom manifold may be thought to incorporate an intercooler now before its running.
