    Hi!
I've recently purchased an 89 TT 2+2 fairlady Z. Odd thing is there is no compliance plate....and when I got the rego papers it had an exemption stating " exempt from ADR and compliance".
What does this mean and how was was it imported without compliance? The previous owner has had it for 10 plus years I'm told.

I have seen this on other imports as well - it may be that it was a private import - but that is a guess, I dont know the actual reason.

    IB ?????

For a short period of time there was a 15 year rule where 15 year old cars could be imported without compliance.

Correct, 15 year old imports do not need compliance plates. Proof of rego for these cars is super important if it ever goes interstate though.

    Puzzling ?????

It may have been a vehicle that was owned overseas by an Aussie citizen and brought back with them when they returned to Australia.

The 15yr rule cars did not have compliance plates fitted BUT they did have to pass compliance in order to be registered in Australia. I doubt that any were "exempt from ADR and compliance"

we have a imported swb Pajero in our club that has that comment on its rego papers - it was a private import ie owned for over a year before being imported. I have also seen an old mitsi turbo (rwd 80s thing) that also had this comment on its rego papers.....

Would be really interested to see if the Paj, which is heavily modified.... could go over the pits with its 2" body lift 35" tires and 3" suspension lift.

So does this mean I can modify the shit out of it and it's not illegal? I'm talking samarai swords sticking out of the bumpers, 300ft rear wing, flame throwers.....all the regular stuff you want but cant because of those pesky ADRs

And if this is the case, what do you think a monetary value would be for such an exemption over a standard car with regards to sale price. Surely it would have to be worth a reasonable amount more if you have a free pass to modify the car?

I genuinely dont know but the SWB Paj mentioned above is way outside of what can legally be done here in WA.... would be interesting to see if it could actually be put over the pits.

Having said that there is also a Delica van here that has 35's registered on it with huge flares and big lift (its not Caboose for those who may follow that sort of thing) and it was imported privately with those mods and has indeed gone over the pits and passed.... I am led to believe it i also in the ADR exempt catagory however its mods are listed with the dept of transport so it may be like a engineering cert situation
