Now I'd never do this to a road legal Z but my parts car has movement in both vtc cams there's no knocking yet but while I had em off I thought I'd try a fix. Basically I've welded 4 very small tacks evenly spaced onto the rear of one of the cams, thus eliminating any movement. I didnt let it heat up whatsoever and their so small balance shouldnt be an issue, the cams didn't leak oil before so I'm assuming the inner o rings are intact. Just curious if I'm missing something here or weather this could actually work? I have spare cams but they spin too so I thought there's no harm in going bogan on it Thanks alot for any answers, pm if you want a pic
You mean the cam gears, not the actual camshafts correct? Provided you put them in the correct position prior to welding it should work. Or get some solid cam gears...
Yeah the intake cam gears, will definitely be buying some new but those will probably end up on the TT will postup how it goes anyway thanks alot
What you are suggesting depends upon where you are welding... It sounds to me you're trying to lock out the VTC, and if so, you would need to would need to weld inside the well at the parting line shown below. BUT, this is a very close fit to the cam nose and I can guarantee if you weld this area, the VTC will not slide back onto your cam. If you are trying to stop a leak, you would need to weld the rear seal to the gear body at the parting line shown below. BUT, the o-ring for this plate is about 2mm below that parting line, and I can guarantee the heat from even a spot weld will affect the o-ring... If your VTC didn't leak before doing this, there's a good chance it will after. The only way to prevent a leak here by welding would be to weld the entire parting line 360°. Welding this area will not lock out the VTC mechanism. If you really do want to lock out your VTC, I would weld at the front parting line indicated below. Keep in mind, any welding to a VTC will disqualify it as a core towards the purchase of my rebuilds.
