I would be looking at changing whatever I can back to standard (ish?) looking. Not sure what is involved in the plenum that is on it as you can't tell from the pics, that if you can stick a stock plenum back on it, that'd be a good start.

Im lazy but do have another complete 300zx to rob parts from.
i have considered this but this will leave me with an engineers certificate that does not match the mods if i want to go back. or maybe you were just suggesting this to get through a blue slip.?

Would the car run on a standard ECU ? (I dont know the car)

might be a better option to get it past the emissions test. I did it years ago and it was a huge pain.

i should have given a better description of the mods so i didn't waste anyones time, i just didn't want to come across as a tosser saying it was this and that. Madcow - I doubt it could run with a standard ecu as it has a wire in haltech and would also need loom and sensors changed back. what was the issue with emissions that you ran into?

Just getting the numbers right. However this was before E85 became a big thing. I had to give it to Hitman (tuner) to pass, he wanted about 1k. It was not on a VG30

I see , I rang powertune who apparently have the gas machine and tune it to pass but they don’t actually do the test you still have to go to rta and they make no promises that it will pass the rta test . That’s handy I only spoke to the secretary apparently they will ring back when the actual guy that does it turns up this afternoon. Not holding my breath
1k sounds a lot how much is a dyno retune these days ?

Qld was always a much easier place to get modifications signed off, compared to NSW and Vic. They may have caught up these days, given there is a national code of practice to work to now (VSB14). In Vic, and NSW, the sign off is on the vehicle as a whole. You can't sign one part of the vehicle off, like a brake mod, and ignore the engine for eg. You could however do it that way in Qld a few years back.

Anyway, the procedure for a modified car that includes engine mods is it needs an IM240 emissions test done. Ball park $800 in Vic. That's on top of the Eng certificate costs. And you pay for a result, not for a pass. If it meets requirements, then the engine part of a modified car is ok. The test requirements are detailed in VSB14.

Assuming a "blue slip" is equivalent to our road worthy certificates, then unless the road worthy guy is dodgey, he won't issue a blue slip on a modified car without an engineers certificate. So don't screw around, just ring a local engineer, give him a run down of all the mods, see if he is someone you can work with to make the car legal, and if so, tee up an inspection with him. Once he's issued the Eng certificate, the blue slip will be a breeze.

Also, this might be handy for you, I have heard the emissions testing in NSW is free. Or at least cheap. In Vic, we have to get it done by private service providers, hence the high cost.

thanks Beano, yes testing is free in NSW at the RMS . but it will still cost to have it tuned to pass that test so may still cost similar as victoria. i think it would be easier to have the guy tuning also be the guy testing the emissions so it all works out first time rather than going back and forward between a private business and a government authority. I have spoken to an engineer and will be seeing him soon. This is going to suck money .

It sure does. Thats why i was asking with my inital questions about really needing it done.

well the only other option is to spend a lot of time and money making the car look standard. it also means that if i get pulled up in the future i could end up having to either do all the standardising again to clear a defect or go through engineering. i don't want to do any of it its just the reality of interstate transfers/ modified cars. ideally it would be engineered so i could legally do what i wanted. the only downside is money that scenario.

It has a large single throttle body plenum ABS removal haltech e85 hi flow fuel system big turbos , mike smith manifolds 3,1/2 inch exhaust with tiny resonators and no cats
Air to water intercooler, 2speed power glide gearbox alloy tail shaft adjustable suspension coil overs some aftermarket front bar with a mouth like a catfish 18 inch wheels. I don’t know the rest

thanks east coast z , I've got some reading to do and i saw the car today for the first time. Its had some really good work and some great parts and is a credit to the original owner. By his own admission he ran out of money and i can understand that problem. So it is little unfinished in a few areas. its a race car rather than a road car . So i have to clean up some of the things that are functional but attract the eye a little and let down the good stuff. No matter who's looking at the car if it's super neat everywhere it is going to have a better chance than something obviously needing a clean up.
