So I finally got a 1 piece tail shaft for my TT auto, fitted it in and the vibration in the car is worse than the 2 piece with crook uni's, I removed it and sent it away for balance and it came back all good, refitted it and the vibration is still there detectable at about 60km/ph to as fast as you like I put the car up on the hoist with motor running and in gear, I can see by eye slight movement in the shaft, also noticed tranny oil running out past the seal it doesnt with the original, my question is does the bush in the end of the housing wear, it's the only thing I cant check properly, I have a spare tranny that I can swap the back end from, to be honest the original 2 peice when warm is as smooth as butter. any one have any clues what to check next

You need to "clock it" with a dial indicator.

When you mention, after sending it away for balancing & it came back "all good".
Does that mean no balancing was required, or it's "all good" now because it has been rebalanced?

It sounds like a you are talking about a used tail shaft & not a brand new one, if you're sending it out for balancing.

You could try shifting the mounting position on the diff yoke.

Thanks yes it was used but hadn't very much use, I will call the drive mob tomorrow the invoice just says setup and balance as required, I couldn't see anything different on it after it came back, it's out of the car now.

I agree with east coast. I had a brand new one made and it was balanced but bent. Had to get them to make another one.

If you have access to a dial indicator & a marking pen, I could let you know how to clock it.

Can anyone give me the part number or where to buy a new correct slip yoke, I think that it must the problem. The tail shaft was running true it had a very slight bend that was rectified

Unfortunately there is no spare part available for the slip yoke.

The part number for the tail shaft, which is called a propeller shaft by Nissan, is 37000-30P15.
This part number is relevant for 07/1989 through to 01/1997.

Which would apply to your 11/1989 2+2 Auto TT.

If you still have the original two piece shaft available, have a look at how the universal joints are staked in position.
You will notice in order to replace the universals, there is no provision to accurately secure replacement universals.
That's why there is no spare slip yoke available.

How are the universals secured in your one piece tail shaft?

Once again, if you have the original two piece shaft available, measure the OD of the one piece slip yoke in comparison to the original two piece item.

they are replaceable uni's still it doesnt explain why this one piece vibrates and tests perfect at the the machine shop, that is why I asked if the there is a bush in the rear of the extension housing that may be worn from the old shaft

    I agree with EastCoastZ ...........

Disconnect the tailshaft from the diff and rotate the assy in a clockwise direction ONE bolt and refit. Test drive and repeat procedure if no change is noted. When you find the right position, mark the position for future reference

The response concerning the yoke was in relation to:

"Can anyone give me the part number or where to buy a new correct slip yoke, I think that it must the problem. The tail shaft was running true it had a very slight bend that was rectified"

    Re:

"they are replaceable uni's still it doesn't explain why this one piece vibrates and tests perfect at the machine shop, that is why I asked if the there is a bush in the rear of the extension housing that may be worn from the old shaft"

There is no mention of a bush in the rear extension assembly in the Nissan spare parts catalogue.

You mentioned, "I have a spare tranny that I can swap the back end from"
Remove it & see what's in there.

Icram, the problem might be too much play on the output shaft from the auto tranny. There should be minimal movement. Not sure how easy it is to fix though.

the LH rear drive shaft has a wobble it's not bad I didn't think this was the cause, but now I was wondering if the solid tail shaft was accentuating the vibration. Anybody have a good one to sell me.

that was my thought also I will replace the bent side shaft and see what that does, I have put the tail shaft into the spare g/box and it is solid

In relation to your difficulty in acquiring a replacement axle in the Wanted Section.
Have you considered removing the suspect axle & taking it to a machine shop, or to someone with a good lathe, & ask them to check it for run out.
When you have a look at the axle, you can see it would take a significant force to bend it.
If it is bent, there is likely to be evidence of suspension damage/repairs.

Have you checked the condition of suspension, diff, transmission & engine mounts/bushes?

thanks east coast, no I haven't, I use the car every day but the time is coming I may have to take it off the road, the axle has about 1mm of runout the car has had a considerable impact on that side, first thing i did when i got it was to replace the rim it was buckled, the bearing was faulty that and was replaced as well as rotors, I have a low km replacement diff to go in just in case, the vibration is slight but noticeable with the 2 piece and undriveable with the one piece there is a guy on gum tree with a collection of z's I am waiting for him to return my message as he has one available.

I had a great deal of trouble chassing a vibration in my old 2+2 many years ago. I had the centre bearing replaced on the 2 piece shaft, vibrated bad. Clocked the shaft in every combination possible. Replaced gearbox mount, replaced diff and subframe mounts. I may have intalled a 1 piece shaft, can't remember now. Nothing really fixed it completely, though it did improve... It got worse the faster you went. I sold the car to ZToy who did a TT swap with the same driveline and gearbox, but reported no issues. Very strange!
