    Lets play a game....

    So a little engine history.
Last rebuilt in 2011 by A2ZED.
Has apparently done approximately 2500km before noise developed and has since been parked up.
Fully forged top to bottom and i suspect aftermarket cams as they used JWT cam springs.

Seems most prominent around passenger bank and from top end. Oil pressure at 60psi so that hopefully isnt the problem.
Borescope down 2 & 4 shows no sign of valve contact, no broken ring lands but it has a fair amount of carbon build up and oil is pretty dark for a fresh engine with such low kms on it.

Next step will be to double check timing hasn't jumped on the passenger gears but i would expect to see valve contact.

My thoughts are lifters completely collapsed, VCT gear stuffed or cam has a wiped lobe.

What are your thoughts, anything else i should be looking at before pulling this motor out and down to check its not a spun bearing or a bent rod etc...

Based on the sound and engine history I won't be surprised if it's a failed timing tensioner flapping about

    Now there's a thought !!!!!

Timing on passenger side is still in alignment.

Scope down 6 shows nothing sinister. Ill check driver bank now but im suspecting a camshaft

All cylinders show no signs of contact
Next ill pull all the timing covers off for a look. Im praying its a tensioner but im highly doubting it considering passenger bank is all still aligned.

Sounds like a shagged oil pump to me!

Thats a possibility but its sus that ive got 60psi oil pressure at idle on an autometer gauge

Actually, i think ive identified potential part of the problem. I just smelt the fuel and id hazard a guess its still from 2011 and im wondering if its knocking and popping due to the extremely low octane. Ill pump the fuel out and put some fresh i before i go any further aswell as some fresh oil.

It definitely sounds more mechanical to me but i assumed whoever the mechanic was who looked at it recently would have done the fuel at a minimum.

I had a similar sound coming from mine after rolling my first zed. Oil pressure appeared fine but oil pump was toast. Replacing the pump fixed the noise and thankfully engine escaped any damage as as result!

Cool, ill definitely look into that. Thanks

Good luck mate, it's a nice build you have there so you don't need the dramas of something major going wrong. Do the fuel and check the tensioner and hopefully it's one of them

Thanks mark, its a spare engine im putting aside as a backup incase mi e goes bang for whatever reason, lets call it an insurance policy lol

    IB ?????

I had a failed tensioner and the cams all stayed in alignment. The sound was similar, also sounded a lot like failed lifters. If I were you I'd be taking the timing belt covers off next.

Yeah, I drove Eden to Canberra with a failed tensioner, it quietened down at highway revs though. Wouldn't recommend it but the belt seems pretty good at staying where it belongs.

Ok fantastic, that was my next main check before I attempted to start it again. I already had to rebuild thw forged engine that is destined for my car due to a failed idler stud so i dont plan on having to open this one up unless absolutely necessary.

Also that same engine had the relief bolt still in the tensioner and had worked its way tight, that was another reputable zed mechanic

Am I the only one that thinks it sounds more like a metallic kind of knocking noise?

I had a failed timing belt tensioner once, from memory in real life you could hear the rubber belt oscillating. Sounded like this:

Yeah your not the only one ryan. Ill be checking the timing belt this week and if that is fine ill be pulling the sump off for inspection. My gut feeling is its going to be rod knock, most likely a spun or disintegrated bearing, i was just really hoping it wasn't

Did fresh oil and fuel make a difference
If you haven't done it yet, remember that Castrol RX engine oil (recommended for diesel engines) 20W40, I think.

Cleans and makes engine run quieter
