Oil pump noise?

    Hi guys,

Recently changed the oil pump because it was making a rattling noise on cold start and the oil pressure was extremely low.

I bought a brand new TT oil pump along with an oil strainer off CZP. Spent 3 days in the workshop and finished the job.

Now it's making a loud noise whenever I rev over 3000rpm and gets worse as I go harder. See link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQsvw7Ke7Vk

    What I have done:

    1. Reinstalled the timing belt several times to ensure the tension is correct
    2. Removed all accessory belts

I am a bit lost now. Perhaps the new TT oil pump is faulty? Has anyone had any similar experience when upgrading oil pump from NA to TT?

However I am getting very good oil pressure. Please help!

EDIT: Forgot to mention - brand new 120K timing belt kit was only installed a month ago.

make sure it isnt the timming belt making the noise

One (or more) stuffed Crankshaft/Con-rod Bearings(due to previous LOW Oil Pressure issue)??:(:br:

Doesn't sound like bearings to me - this is what you would hear: Clicky

I've had similar noises in the past from overtight timing belts. I'd be looking at the timing belt and bearings in more detail. How did you ensure the tension was correct? No sign of the belt or bearings rubbing on the timing belt cover.

My understanding is the NA and TT oil pumps are the same except for the oil pressure relief setting. I'd be surprised if it's the pump. Did you have a play with it when new? Run smooth/ Filled it with oil or petroleum jelly before fitting?

    Thanks guys.

I reinstalled the timing belt a few times and checked the gap in the auto tensioner to ensure it's 4mm. I've driven the car for about 50kms and I see no obvious signs of excessive wear. It is making the noise even when timing covers are off too.

I noticed the noise is fairly consistent. It only whines after 3k rpm.

What extra steps (apart from what mentioned in DSM) can I take to ensure the tension is correct?

That's pretty much all you can do with the tension... What belt are you using?

When the covers are off can you narrow down the location of the noise?

    Nissan OEM belt.

The noise is coming from the bottom of the car. I had someone using a stethoscope and it is extremely loud when touching the oil sump.

Thanks for the input mate. I guess the only option is to replace the oil pump again. I didn't pay too much attention when I bought it new (should have checked the clearance).

Yes, it'll be interesting to see what its like when you get it out. Get the feeler gauges out ;)

You say its engine speed related! What oil pressure are you getting at idle, below 3000rpm, above 4000rpm. Could it be the oil pump relief valve. Comes new as part of new oil pump but you may have a bad one.

    I suspect that too.

When fully warmed up I am getting:
    2kg at idle
    4kg above 3500rpm

    7kg when cold start.

I am just really curious if anyone ever heard what a bad oil pump sounds like.

What are you measuring this on. If its OEM forget it, sender units and gauges are just ornamental. Fit a known good pressure gauge directly to sender unit fitting. Relief Valve should not lift at these hot pressures

Has the motor been out or the car jacked up by the sump ?. Dented sump perhaps.
    Cheers

Thanks will get an oil pressure gauge. Am I looking for unusual oil pressure throughout the rpm range (therefore confirming the pump is faulty)?

Thanks Dave. It's interesting that you mentioned sump. I had a close look when I took it off and found out the bottom has some minor scratch. Don't know if it's significant enough to cause the issue.

However there is a half moon shaped gasket that goes underneath the oil pump I didn't replace. Would that cause any problem?

If the Relief valve is lifting you should see that at 3000rpm or when noise starts that the oil pressure stops rising or even falls a little.
I hope that going to all the trouble of changing the oil pump you replaced ALL the gaskets.!!

Thanks Martin. I replaced all gaskets possible. The one I was referring to sits between oil pump and oil sump. I couldn't find it anywhere so ended up RTV it.
