    Rear Main Seal

As I expected, the rear main seal on the car is leaking. So I need to replace that first and foremost.

I think I've got the part numbers right. Can anyone check to see if it's the right one?

    Rear main seal: 12279-3T30A
    Rear Retainer Gasket: 12298-7B001
    Rear main seal retainer: 12291-F6500

Liquid gasket i can just pick-up.

I just slapped a single ringy-ding rear main in! nor sure about those other retainers...

No part number for you sorry - I just grabbed the listed item form Bursons. they are a fairly common fit apparently.

    Advice needed

Progress is slow and steady on this. At least my back is better.

So the Egr has been disabled and blanking plates installed. But there isn't enough space to remove/cut the lines without taking out the plenum so they're just sitting there.

My current challenge is getting the damn drivers side extractors out. I can see the bolts but either I get some super long spanners and come in from under the bonnet or somehow get a hold of them from the top.

Can anyone give some advice as to how to unbolt the extractors on the right/drivers side?

so you need to do two jobs that would be easier with the plenum removed..............

seems like the answer is remove plenum, fix problems.

That would be a job from under the car with steering column disconnected. Taking plenum off would also make your life much easier.

    Thanks.

I'm starting to think that taking the plenum off would help me with a whole bunch of things.

    It's pretty daunting though.

I've only done it plenum off; no need to unbolt steering linkage they'll lift straight out

Do you mean the steering linkage will lift straight out or the extractors will lift straight out (once plenum is removed).

The extractors will lift straight out

At the last bit of the disassembly stage: Pilot bushing.

I've tried bread, I've tried wet tissues.. this auto pilot bushing is not budging.

Does anyone have a pilot bushing removal tool I could borrow? :)

I used some heavy weight grease and a 20mm cap bolt. Packed the cavity full and started hammering the bolt into the middle. It took a fair while to get it started, but after a few repacks of grease to get all the air out it eventually came out.

Last one i also used a bit of 20mm OD stock tubing i have as a drift and it worked also. But grease was the answer.

Use like wheel bearing grease if you have some.

    Get amongst this

When I did mine I didn't try this because I thought it sounded a lot harder than it is. Worked better than i thought.

I ended up buying the removal tool....

Long story short, I accidentally sabotaged the 'grease removal process' by cutting into the bushing (was trying to remove the bushing by cutting it up).

I had grease spitting into my face and all over my overalls while - So I caved and spent $80 on a tool that used for 10mins.

Then I snapped a bolt while reassembling the rear main seal.

I got it all done in the end, and no leaks so far. But I had install and remove the seal 3 times, smudging the gasket sealer a little. So naturally, now I'm paranoid that I didn't do it right.

    Your Aussie?

Just say "It'll be right" and move on. haha.

Just questioning though, where was this sealer you smudged? Did you put sealant on the OD of the RMS?

    Kiwi... Bro :p

If by OD you mean outside diameter, then yes on the surface that mates with the motor.

BTW I hate the "She'll be right" attitude. I just want to do it properly.

    Yeah righto. Bruz ;)

Shouldnt have worried about the sealant on the seal. Its not needed. The seal is compression fit so it needs nothing at all to lock together. As long as it went on square to the crank, thats all that matters.

Yeah I found out about afterwards. I just assumed that sealant was always needed. But after my faffing around it's probably better. It went on square to the crank and no leaks have developed since.

Ok so it turns out the kid I bought the donor car from had 8 of the 9 clutch cover bolts and used a different one for the one he lost. Its the correct size and thread but isn't the same metal and has a thinner metal washer.

    I honestly don't know how I didn't notice before.
But now technically one bolt short.

Should I just use the one he did or get the right one. I'd rather get the right one but that's one difficult thing to find on a Sunday.

Ha! Turns out ALL the bolts are wrong.

On the hunt for a full set now.

Possibly more premium than you're looking for but rgsperformance (Rob260) has ARP kits for ~$130, based in Sydney.
