This is the 3rd heatercore fix ive done on a Zed, and each time a new challenge has become apparent. This time, I had a whole heap of trouble getting the heater box back in place. This alone literally took me 2 hours. I have no idea why. Also, getting the bottom of the AC box off was almost impossible, wheras on previous attempts, its just fallen off when all the clips were removed. Wierd. Anyway, got there in the end. Didn't take many pics (have a whole heap from the previous times Ive done this), but the ones below give you an idea of the pain...

Getting the heater hoses off. A real pain, especially if you want to reuse the hose. No room to move your hands, and down behind the engine. Lots of skin lost and many cuts errghhh.

    And so it begins...

Ok, I jumped a lot of steps, but this is where you have to get to to get the heatercore out...

The dreaded heaterbox. Well, the heaterbox is not that hard. Its getting to it thats the pain. Anyway, once here, undo some clips, undo some bolts and pull out the core... Spent a bit of time pulling the box apart to clean out the coolant that had collected inside.

And here is the little culprit. Put the core in a tub of water and blew air into the pipes. A nice stream of bubbles coming from where the red circle is showed where the source of the leak was. Its directly where one of the pipes connects to the core so I suspect the flow of water at that point over the years has eroded the core in that spot and caused a weak spot.

Much to my amusement, once I ripped the glove box out, I found some genuine Japanese tissues and 7Eleven Chopsticks that had fallen behind the glove box and forgotten about. Some original JDM equipment right there :)

Anyway, finally started the car tonight and bled the system. Everything seems to be working, just have some tidying up to do, give the car a clean and get back on the road. If the core leaks again anytime soon I will be burning the car.

great job, first sentence sums it up nicely. I'm thinking if my heater core ever goes I'll just part the car:)

    FYI

    The tissues came from:

Cosmo (Petrol Station Chain) Marusaka Service Station

Address is Nagano Pref, Ueda City, Shimo Takeshi 1212-7

    Map

Driven through Ueda, pretty close to the in laws house. Lots of snow in winter, pretty sure they dont use salt on the roads there.

    That is cool :)

Is that what the Japanese text on the tissue packet says? :)
