Weird wiring job

Someones spliced into my dash cluster and my air conditioning pod, for what seems like no reason. They are getting power from the red yellow wiring and the green red ones from the cluster and from the air conditioning. They have tried to do the same for the cruise control pod too. The cables that they spliced onto this go down to behind the stereo and seem to splice into the positive and negative there. They don't seem to lead anywhere else. Could this be someone trying to fix a fuse blowing problem?

It could be the CAUSE of your fuse blowing problem.

I had a alarm + locking system someone hard wired into the interior light door circuit (i think it was only very small fuse) and every time i replaced the fuse it was fine until i went to lock or unlock the door it was blow the fuse. trying to run the 2 motors at the same time was enough current draw to exceed the capacity of the fuse and make it blow.

Same idea in your case, all the new pod stuff wired in could be drawing more current that the fuse can hold and making blow.

Don't think you can get away by just putting a bigger fuse, this will only lead to fires when the wires heat up and melt.

I don't have a fuse blowing problem at the moment. Although I haven't checked if someone has put a bigger fuse in already. I will do that.

Looks like there was a 15A in the 10A Audio1 slot.

I've already removed the aftermarket alarm system. Are those wires coming from the pod and the cluster just power and ground? I couldn't find a diagram anywhere.

It could be related to something not working & sections of the original harness have been bridged/bypassed.
The Green/Red wire is usually associated with the illumination circuitry & is a + wire.
Not sure about the Yellow/Red wire, but a multimeter should tell you whether it's + or -.

The car originally had a boost gauge and a water temp gauge, alarm system, turbo timer and a red light warning on the dash for water temp. I've removed all of those except for the turbo timer, and I added an EBC. It just looks to me like someone has bridged for extra power, but I don't know why, because it's hooked into the stereo wiring too.

You could cut the modified wiring out of the circuits & reconnect to original configuration.
Then if something isn't working, diagnose the problem/s & correct them properly.

That's the plan, but it looks like they've messed with the air condition pod the most, there's disconnected wires and everything there, but from what I could tell everything worked. They've disconnected those two coloured wires on the harness side and then spliced into the connectors that go to the air condition pod, so it looks like they're powering the illumination with power from the stereo?

Well I fixed the problem, just hooked everything up to stock, changed the fuse to the stock 10A size. I also hooked up the power antenna this time. But now I've got a problem putting the left pod back together, seems a common problem but the studs for the hazard lights broke on me, and it doesn't look like you can buy new ones, anyone got a good DIY solution?

Get a small fibreglass kit join any parts you have and then reinforce /build it up accordingly - that's what I did since araldite wasn't strong enough and it kept breaking

Use Epoxy ribbon/Kneadit to fix and mould new ears for the screw holes. That stuff will hold the threads just fine.

Seems like my dash cluster doesn't light up now, I need to double check my wiring, but is there anything else I need to look out for? I know the fuse is the clearance illumination one, and it's fine. But is there any others?

Looks like I found the culprit I hope [IMG]
I'll have to get another TCU to test.

looks like someone was just tapping power/ground, did you pull it and re-solder the connection?

Well it turned out the timer control unit was broken. I resoldered the wire on it, which fixed the problem giving me full illumination. It looks like they jerry rigged from the stereo power to power the illumination instead of checking the TCU.

Congratulations, you've done a good job of tracing the fault & repairing it.

Now to get all these half broken trim pieces back into position.
