Hey Guys amd Gals Just wondering if anyone has a workaround for these new rego plate recognition cameras.Mine has been fine for 10 years and got pulled over last night because the camera couldn't read my number plate (edges bent up to fit , main part of plate flat). Thx for your time Steve
Yes QLD does have the slim fit plates, BUT not at all QLD tpt offices, you will need to ring your, or go into your local one and ask, they might get them in for you or direct you too the closest branch.
Sounds a bit funky to me. I just went out and had a look at my standard qld number plate mounted in the j-spec rear bar with the edges folded on. Could make out the numbers standing upright at a 45 degree angle from as close as 5 metres away. I'd be taking some photos from 20m away at a 45 degree angle as proof before even thinking about paying the fine. I once had a copper try and fine me when I was driving a mate's Pajero because the spare tire was mounted on the rear door (from factory the number plate is on the lhs of the door, spare mounted on the rhs) and he couldn't see it from his drivers door from where he parked the car behind me. Funny that he dropped the idea once I asked him what measuring tools he was using to determine the factory mounting location was illegal. Just out of curiousity how much did they sting you anyway? Straight from the TMR website: The characters on a number plate must be visible from 20m away at any point within an arc of 45 degrees from the surface of the plate, above or to either side of the vehicle. This is shown in the diagrams below. Figure 1: Light vehicle number plate visibility
Try a search .... Way back, Pexzed posted a copy of the specific legislation which in fact allows for some form of alteration to plates where they will not fit a particular model/make of vehicle. I have a copy of this paper somewhere ... but god only knows where.
Are QLD slim plates longer than NSW? Its just that I have NSW rego slim lines and whilst they bend at the extremes to fit into the J-Spec rear, they still are picked up by the police cameras. (I was pulled over the day my plates expired whilst heading to the rego - lol) Anyway - just thought it was worth mentioning. Aus-Spec rear / modify the bar so that licence plate sits flat and the licence plate is moved or modified or lastly place the plate in the alternate approved ugly position with a new licence plate lamp are the only viable options. Yep - but it is more or less to mount them further on the side (in the approved locations), but it looks awful and so is not worth the effort of looking up but the real problem is they still require licence plate lamps to be moved or modified to conform with legislation GL Steve :zlove
"...... " NOPE ... from memory that was not the case........ It was a case of having to fit a plate into the OEM space available without being subject to legal action.
I cut a slot in the sides of the recess so I did not have to bend the plates (I think that in itself is illegal) Not much difference in visibility though - might gain 5-10mm
a little googling and i found this very interesting as i got done for the exact same thing "not clear and visible from 45deg" my plate was folded at the ends to fit and cutting the bumper to fit it would affect the structural integrity in a rear impact i think a copy of this should be in the glovebox of every jdm in victoria http://www5.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/vic/consol_reg/rsr2009309/s48.html Affixing number plate (1) The registered operator of a vehicle must ensure each number plate issued by the Corporation for the vehicle is permanently affixed to the vehicle so that, when the vehicle is on level ground— (a) the number plate is at all times in an upright position parallel to the vehicle's axles; and (b) the number plate is at all times not more than 1?3 metres above ground level; and (c) for a motor cycle, the centre of the number plate is at all times at least 30 centimetres above ground level; and Reg. 48(1)(d) amended by S.R. No. 150/2013 reg. 13(a). (d) the number or letters, or both, on the number plate are clearly visible from a distance of 20 metres from the number plate at any point within the space produced by a horizontal arc of 90 degrees and a vertical arc of 45 degrees, as indicated by the shaded areas in figure 5; and (e) any cover on the number plate— (i) is clear, clean, untinted and flat over its entire surface; and (ii) has no reflective or other characteristics that would prevent the successful operation of a device approved for use under a law relating to the detection of traffic offences; and (f) for a motor vehicle other than a motor cycle, one number plate is affixed to the front of the vehicle and another to its rear; and (g) for a motor cycle or trailer, the number plate is affixed to the rear of the motor cycle or trailer. (2) The requirements in subregulations (1)(a) to (d) do not apply to a number plate for a vehicle if— (a) due to the construction of the vehicle it is not practicable to comply with the requirements; and (b) the number plate is affixed in a way that complies as far as practicable with the requirements.
So in Vic we can modify plate to suit vehicle instead of vehicle to suit plate. Wow common sense from a government body.
it would seem qld has similar laws regarding number plates http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/qld/consol_reg/toumrr2010725/s30.html as does nsw http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/documents/roads/safety-rules/standards/vsi-58-number-plate-visibility.pdf under exempted vehicles it says the same as other states and as for modifying number plates your not allowed to cut them because we don't own them we just pay for the privilege of bolting them to our cars
I just cut mine and redone the red outline :zlove: And the police haven't even looked sideways at it !
I slightly folded my plates on the edges in order to make it fit. Had two zeds and never had issues with police having them fitting this way. Been through several defect stations and all is good~~ :zlove:
That's what I did - same but with slimline plates - it was also picked up by police camera, so it must comply within the angles required by regulation and you can see my sig pic where it still reads red quite clearly from the front
Has no one read section 2a and 2b (2) The requirements in subregulations (1)(a) to (d) do not apply to a number plate for a vehicle if— (a) due to the construction of the vehicle it is not practicable to comply with the requirements; and (b) the number plate is affixed in a way that complies as far as practicable with the requirements.
