Clutch replacement

I'm hoping someone can help me.

My '92 JDM 2+0 TT's clutch has failed, I think.

    By that I mean:

    1. a month ago the clutch pedal started to get more and more "soft"

    2. over the weekend it deteriorated to the point where I now can't even shift it into any gear at all (yes, I know; I should have sorted it out last month!)

Is it in need of a clutch replacement?

So given I can't drive it, is it safe to have a mobile mechanic like Lube Mobile replace it? How much would I be looking at it for just a stock standard replacement?

Once it is in gear, does it hold or does the clutch slip?

If it is just a problem with the pedal and shifting, try giving it a bleed first.

My bet is air in the clutch fluid lines, if there are any fluids at all in it.

Plenty of tech articles about, to DIY.

Good luck getting any normal mechanic to do any repairs on your zed.

Most mechanics I've approached had told me to get the bloody thing out of their car park [TIS]

It seems perfectly normal once it is in gear (back when I was able to get it into gear).

Appreciate there's lots of tech articles but I'm too afraid of causing more damage along the way. Do you know what a mech would charge to go what you suggested? i.e. giving it a bleed?

Then your clutch pack itself is fine.

Check the clutch fluid level. If it's empty, top it up so you can take it somewhere to get it bled and checked for leaks. If it looks ok, get a bleed done.

Couldn't tell you a price - $50 give or take? Plus the zed tax?

    Easy job though.

I did a search and couldn't find the answer; where is the clutch fluid reservoir?

    Oh, good question, that!

It won't be clearly labelled, but it's one of them in the engine bay, sitting nice and high like the brake and power steering fluid reservoirs, from memory :help:

You should really have a good look in the tech section. There are a myriad of pictures and diagrams that will give you a good layout of your engine bay.:zlove:

Folks, I searched in Tech as well as the internet generally cannot for the life of me find where the reservoir is.

Can you someone point me in the right direction please?

Drivers side, against the firewall. You've got a large container for brake fluid, then there's a small one to its right for your clutch.

    This not being flippant, but
A: How long have you owned a 300ZX(this will indicate how long it is since the Clutch Fluid Level was checked)?
B: Is your car Automatic or Manual(it has a Clutch Pedal)(this will help to explain why you can't find the Clutch M/Cyl Reservoir)?

A: Since 1994, it's had a major service since though

    B: Manual

Midas have quoted me $500 parts and labour to replace the master clutch cylinder and slave cylinder and the pipe in between them.

    Is that a fair price?

The clutch master/ slave and line will tally about $250ish in parts delivered.

If the shop is willing to do it all for $500 and take ownership of the problem then its not too far off ballpark.

    Thanks!

As a separate question, is dot 3 brake fluid the stuff that should be used when topping up the reservoir?

That's what I used and the mechanic claims doing that has now damaged the master, slave and pipes...

Could also be moisture in the fluid, what colour is it?, as for a new master & slave cylinder, I am going to rebuild mine at a cost of $14 for master cylinder rebuild kit & $9 for slave, I will get a mate to help so may cost a six pack as well....

I think it's brown or green - really hard to tell just peering into the reservoir tank.

Is the mechanic BSing me by saying dot 3 brake fluid has damaged both cylinders and the piping?

This is just a regular chain store mechanic so don't be shy about being frank.

mixing fluid will lead sometimes to damage the internal parts especially 2 different types of fluids
    $500 seems ok

Dot 3 should be fine. I always use Dot 4 on road cars but they mix and will not damage internals. Its more likely that age is the issue as hydraulic fluid is hydroscopic, which means over time it will absorb moisture from the air, this causes corrosion and failure of components. $500 seems a reasonable figure for new components and labour

often the master cylinder leaks down the inside of the cabin firewall and can get both master and clutch resleeved cheaper but its up to you
